The last few days there has been a lot of chatter about survival situations and how we would take care of them.

The chances are that you will never be in this type of situation. We are doing this as a gedanken experiment (thought experiment)t, nothing more.

Those of us that may come across as "I live and you die, bitch" types are just exploring ways to make sure that everybody lives.

If we don't survive we can't help others survive. It sounds rough but we are looking at ways to preserve life, not harm it. Although G-d help you if you get in between me and the kids if there is a real emergency.

I don't know how it went from field-expedient sanitation to blowing up zombies with claymores attached to the outside of a home-made armored car, but it is fun to talk about.

Considering the drivers in my town, I want a WW2 M3 Greyhound armored car to drive everyday (replacing the M2 50 with a minigun of course)

I just want roo bars so when the college kids with headphones on stroll out into the street from between parked cars without looking, they get safely deposited on the other side of the car.

I have to admit, if you have nanogenes in your survival kit we have nothing to worry about.

Hopefully not into traffic! I'd like one that allows me to pick and choose which one gets safely pushed aside and which ones get tossed into my soundproof, padded storage bin in back. There are some college kids that need some further 'educating', in my opinion.

Well now, that kinda depends. It's easy (and fun) to go over the top into the zombie apocalypse scenario, but who has never experienced a power outage?

No matter where you might live in the world, Mama Nature has some means at hand to mess up your day, weekend, week, or longer.

MC,I wouldn't want to take any of them home. And traffic in downtown is a snarl at all time, I doubt they would get hurt. But I have wanted to grab their phones, call their mothers and tell them what idiots their kids are.

With a decades long fascination with how they did things way back when, I often do more than a thought experiment.
One reason I don't use dryer lint for kindling... polyester stink if vile.

One recent experiment started with sticker shock at the price of marine spar varnish. That stuff is hard to find and extremely high priced. All the paint stores want to sell you urethane varnish.

Ok, urethane is ok for cheap bookshelves. But urethane leaves a water tight layer of plastic on the surface of wood. Spar varnish soaks into the wood and polymerizes making the wood harder while waterproofing. and... (think Topol accent) it is TRADITIONAL

I researched wood finishes from before petrochemical chemistry took over. I found out how easy it was to make shellac and varnish. I even found a recipe for the red violin varnish used on Stradivarious violins. That stuff is beautiful and the ingredients were cheap. (thank you eBay)

Did you know that "shellac" was originally not some cryptic formula from an oil refinery but simply the shells of the lac beetle dissolved in ethanol?
