jlf1961 -> I have been informed..... (12/13/2013 4:00:28 AM)

Once more my family is trying to change me.

Now, it seems my jacket is not appropriate for very cold weather.

The jacket in question is a fleece lined insulated flannel jacket.

Granted, anything below 35 requires me to put on a sweat shirt, and a insulated underwear shirt in order to stay warm, but still, once in the car with the heater running, I want to pull everything off.

So I suggested an alternative, a replica WW2 bomber jacket, lined with sheep skin, and a reasonable $739.00. Of course that price includes the company finding and duplicating the nose art from the B17 that my great uncle flew out of Thorpe Abbots with the 100th bomber group.

Admittedly, there are companies that are less expensive that will do the same thing, but this is a protest move.

Actually there is one I like better with the same option at $218.00

Go for the $218 one...I like a man in bomber jackets...

Of course you are still too far away for me to chase...

Now, of course, there is one for $1100 that is made of the same grade goatskin, sherling lining etc as the originals, and weighs a whopping 20 pounds by itself, more for larger sizes.

For that price I would expect a little more, like pilot training to fly a b17, there are six in texas btw. One of em is even for sale, it was a former static display at some airport, just needs a few things, like four engines, cockpit restoration, intercom restoration, oxygen system restoration, even the control cables were stripped out of the damn thing.

Should be able to get it back in the air in a couple of days....

Yes, and I even have a pic of the Fort that my great uncle flew... with that very nicely formed woman in red lingerie. The pic isnt real clear on the nose art, so I am not sure which pin up model she is, but it seems that the air force has a photo archive of all these pictures.

DesFIP -> RE: I have been informed..... (12/13/2013 6:30:40 PM)

I say go for it. You do so much for everyone else, why shouldn't you do something just for you.

PeonForHer -> RE: I have been informed..... (12/13/2013 6:41:58 PM)

Get yourself a proper military greatcoat, JLF. They're pretty cheap. I hear you can even get ex Soviet Army ones with the insignias still on. So heavy you can't walk in them, but you won't get cold.

To be honest, I would be happy with a good old fashioned field jacket and liner, or for really cold weather, an army issue arctic parka.

In reality, the family knows I am not serious about the really expensive jacket, and they realize that the nose art is basically a way to honor a favorite relative.

So while it is out of the question at present, and they are actually looking for the field jacket and liner in my size, they are also looking at some range (ranch) coats that are reasonable and good quality.

As I said in another post, I am working on being a difficult, grouchy old geezer. My grandson said I was too nice to be an old guy.

He was also the one that asked me and my daughter in laws dad if they had cars and tv's when we were kids.

Just tell him that when you were young, you rode a dinosaur to school. Both ways, barefoot in the snow.

Up hill, both ways.

Just how cold does it get in your part of Texas?

Well three weeks ago when the first ice storm hit, it wasnt so bad, it only got down to 23 at night and we had highs in the high twenties the first two days. Now last week, it was a bit worse, lows in the teens and highs in the mid twenties for four days. On the fifth day it hit forty, but then a dry cold front came through and the sixth day had a high of 29.

Now knowing that the lower the salinity of the north Atlantic affects the currents that move north with warm water, and the northern ice caps in Greenland have been melting a lot which could in theory dilute the salt content of the northern ocean, making the winters cooler, and we have had record highs the last since I moved back here, and we are in the fifth year of a drought...

tommonymous -> RE: I have been informed..... (12/14/2013 12:42:14 PM)

Jeff, I'm guessing you're familiar with the website of the 100th Bomber Group but just in case you're not I thought I'd post it up.

EDIT: As far as jackets go, get something you'll enjoy and that will keep you warm enough for you. Also, as it sounds like you know, layers are your friend in the cold. But, cotton is not.

Tommy, the army saw fit to train me for arctic combat, although our standard equipment all year round was tropical or desert gear. Prior to the army I have hunted with family in North Carolina, Montana and Wyoming.

So I know about layers, especially the part if you get too hot, you can take something off, and put it back on when you feel the cold.
