I played 18 holes of golf with a guy who "hated Tiger Woods" and thought that the problem with Baltimore City was "niggers." My feeling is that I cannot change anyone like that by getting insulted, and I feel I have more to learn by simply listening. I also like others to be candid and prefer that over bigots who deny their own biases. Over the weekend a tennis friend of mine said "in order to get the other side" I needed to watch Fox News. To this, I did not really know how to respond, so I simply did not respond. I've been thinking about it a fair amount since, and it occurred to me that the irony of Fox News is how closely it resembles the old Soviet Press and its coverage of the WEST. To some degree, this is what the message boards have taught me: others' views are usually etched in granite and others generally are ignorant of their own biases. The Fox News tennis player was lamenting how millions had lost their health care coverage b/c of Obama care, but he never balanced that with fact that many more millions prior to Obama care lacked health insurance altogether, that health care costs in the USA are the highest in the world, and that those costs have been dropping under Obama.
