A 13yo girl came out to her parents, not as a lesbian, but as an atheist. Their response was to kick her out of their home and "disown" her.
For me, this is the true face of religious fundamentalism here in the US. Is suppose you can make the case that at least they didn't try to kill her, but
please, don't try any No True Scottsman BS here - I've heard it all before.

Yet again, I am glad I abandoned Catholicism for Unitarian Universalism.

http://www.uua.org/beliefs/faq/index.shtml

Unitarian Universalism welcomes people with diverse beliefs. Individual Unitarian Universalists may identify with and draw inspiration from many different religious or philosophical traditions, which can include Atheism/Agnosticism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Paganism.

ETA - I can't find an actual news story about that, just reposts about the blog entry.

FR -

A 13-year-old tells her parents she is an atheist (or gay, or a vegan, or whatever) and in response the parents kick her out and disown her?

Do they not understand what being a teenager is all about?

Apparently not.

I love Christianity....have a hard time finding a place in my heart for Christians though.

How can they be Christians if they violate the one Prime Directive Jesus of Nazarath left, "Do unto others . . ."

It comes from a moral code they have that says this behavior is wrong and they are practicing tough love, tough because it is not easy to do, I am certain, and who am I to judge their moral code any more than they might judge mine, or yours for that matter? But, are they allowed as parents to apply their moral code to their offspring? I should think that is part of parenting.

Besides, the parents did not remove the child and toss her out in the cold, that is an exaggeration, instead this is offered as fact when it really is the retelling of something heard from an emotional teen age girl at school, please... " The parents both freaked out and told her she can’t live in their house anymore if she doesn’t believe in their god", this is very much an emotional issue for the parents as it is with the girl and one need not be concerned until the girl actually is tossed out on the street. There really is nothing to see here folks.

I don't know about you, but I judge people's moral codes by results. To take an example that's currently exercising the UK authorities, if some religious subgroup's moral code says they should cut off their young daughters' clitorides and sew up their vulvas to save them from sin, we very definitely judge that to be a crime, multiculturalism notwithstanding.

Turning a probably naive and confused 13yo girl out the door is not quite as bad, but still indefensible, considering the all too likely consequences.

First, there is no "result" here of the girl out the door in this article/link, only the something told second hand from an emotional teen age girl. Second, you judge them by your moral code and who is to say you are right except you, so one should keep one's moral code to yourself and not impose it on others. Now, if the parents had said to my daughter, you are wrong to not believe in our God, then I have an issue with them since they impose their moral code, as you do, on others.

I do not judge other's moral code unless they force it on me and then the issue is not their code but their action on me.

Certainly nothing I can see that provides support for such a negative statement in the OP. The Original Posting is an intolerance for another's religion and parental emotional responses.

Something seemed a bit off about this article:

quote:

One of the folks in the Ar. Freethinkers group (Anne’s group) posted this. Any help out there you can suggest? “Today, my daughter’s teacher called my daughter into a conference room to help her talk to an 8th grade girl who just came out to her conservative Christian mom as an atheist yesterday. The girl’s mom had been badgering her for weeks asking her what religion she believes in. The girl finally just blurted out “I’m an atheist, mom!” The parents both freaked out and told her she can’t live in their house anymore if she doesn’t believe in their god. They told her she is no longer their daughter. My daughter read the text messages between the girl and her mom, and was shocked that someone could treat their own child that way. The girl just kept apologizing to her mom over text, and was crying hysterically at school. My daughter couldn’t offer any advice because she “lives in a coexisting home” as she put it. She didn’t know the girl before, but she will be there for her now.

Why would the girl's mom badger her own daughter by asking what religion she believes in? Wouldn't she already know? Something doesn't seem quite right here.

I tried searching Google for what "coexisting home" means.

You have just advanced an eloquent defence of so-called 'honour' killings, female genitial mutilation, stoning women to death for adultery - in fact, all and any of a whole host of culturally approved acts of barbarism that are held to defend a 'moral' code/dogma against 'transgressors, or, as in this case, non-subscribers to the code or dogma'

Congratulations! I wouldn't have thought it possible. At least not possible by a rational sensitive and intelligent human being.

However hiding the sheer evil of your argument behind nice sounding but vacuous platitudes doesn't prevent me from thinking that the 'morality' employed to rationalise and absolve such barbarisms is every bit as depraved and repulsive as the barbarisms it attempts to absolve and excuse

As kids our guardians / parents exert strong influences on us, often applying their own moral values but you know what? most of us grow up unscathed because adults have the ability to develop their own personality styles and that includes their own moral values. The very reason we can talk openly about 'our' moral values is because we have joined the adult world!

My father sent this to me last night:
Watch out for people on CM who post anecdotal shock stories with no link to an actual event or news report.
Who would do that? Got any ideas?
