It ain't just pastry anymore...

Authorities in Florida said a reported handgun that led to a mall lockdown turned out to be a folded-up apron being carried by a waiter. The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said the Port Charlotte Town Centre Mall was locked down Monday after deputies received word around 11 a.m. a man was seen carrying a handgun near the facility's J.C. Penny's store... The mall and several nearby schools were put on lockdown while deputies searched the building. ~UPI

So I was thinking... oh shit, wait! What's that outside the window? Is that a gun or a frog????

Must. Call. Police. Now.

No, it's a Marc2b view. Like your average libertarian I do have a serious anti-authoritarian streak in me (except, of course, when I'm the authority) but I am not one of those radical libertarian types who thinks you should legally be allowed to shoot the mailman for trespassing.

Status: offline 		I think we should have surveillance cameras and checkpoints everywhere. I think we could be a lot more involved in peoples' lives in the interests of keeping them safe.

I think we should immediately disarm everyone (including the cops and military) and just sit on the lawn and hold hands and smoke weed and sing "Kumbaya".

Certainly, I'm not a bad guy so no one else in the world would ever do something that I don't think is right.[/sarcasm]

This is so silly I don't even know where to begin. That some paranoid freak thought an apron concealed a weapon is sad enough. I feel bad for people that are that steeped in any kind of mental illness that affects their life to such a great degree.

But then, we have the mall and a couple of local schools being locked down? Really? Over-react much?

That one person suffers from paranoia is a damned shame. Once it starts top affect an entire society, the end is truly near.

If no one had called it in, and there actually was a massive mall shooting, would anyone been laughing at this event as the alternative to the shooting? No, I think most people would rather a false alarm and be safe, then being unpracticed and attending funerals just before the holidays. If nothing else, it was a good field test of emergency groups to handle a potential crisis and the fleeing of gunmen from the area.

.. flashback to 1978.

While managing a store in a mall; I spotted a fellow in a cheap suit that was carrying a pistol on his hip under the coat.
Hmm, this isn't a normal situation so I called mall security.

They reacted by quietly asking the fellow to step aside and asking him why he had a pistol in a crowded shopping area. (one armed guard approached the fellow and two stood back)

Oh, wow, the fellow had forgotten he had his work pistol on him. (he was a guard at an industrial facility) He went and locked is weapon away in his vehicle.

No muss, no fuss, situation handled.

Sheesh, nanny state panic in the mall. I'll bet bored security had some fun with running an alert for real.

Every man, woman, child on any street USA needs be TSA style groped. Might be up to no good and if not groped and there actually were a serious incident, well, can't allow that.

Besides, all the checking and groping makes for good practice for when that whatever is actually found.

Way to 'take it to the super extreme' viewpoint there. Should get that paranoia checked with your local doctor!

The person reported a firearm on a suspicious person. In reality, most people are not mind readers. What was the person's intention? The person did not know, and simply contacted the police. There is a procedure for what police do in a case like this: suspect maybe armed, crowded area, in a mall, during the day time. Copy cat crimes take place from time to time. The problem was, the police did not have an exact idea of WHO they were looking for, WHERE that person might be and WHAT their intentions could be. Someone made a decision on what to do based on all available information. In situations like this, the person making the decision does NOT have the luxury of 'armchair quarterbacking' after the fact. They have to make a decisive decision given circumstances and go with it for 'better or worst'. They locked the mall and area schools down as a precautionary measure. Then did a search.

I'm saying they made a good decision, and things proved to work out for the best.

What makes for a suspicious person? Evidently the person who reported was wrong. Guess his suspicious detection meter is faulty. You said ... a good decision.

So, just how am I taking it to an extreme? If it was a good decision, no matter the outcome, then I'm just going to where you are leading. The one who is actually paranoid is you. You're the one who actualy wants to go there. Don't you understand that?
