I'm fine with the old gun control law in Chicago. This idea that helpless people were being gunned down every day just wasn't true. We had drug gangs shooting at each other but that was about it.

2 children shot while playing football
A gang shooting, a stray bullet, an innocent victim
Shot Fired At School Bus With Kids Onboard
Gunfire wounds two children at play
Teen Among At Least 7 Killed, 35 Wounded By Weekend Gun Violence
Friends, Family Say Goodbye To Innocent Teen Killed By Gang Gunfire
Woman killed in North Chicago was innocent victim of gang violence
Chicago shooting victim becomes 15th homicide of 2013

That can't happen! They have gun control there!

Aw crap, I just broke my own sarcasm meter. Well, when I say "broke" I mean that it just exploded; the cat is hiding and the neighbors dog is setting up a fearful holler.

I don't even walk in certain parts of Chi-town and I'm a lunatic. Next to Cambden, NJ it's the scariest city I've ever been in.

Home defense? Suburban home, city apartment or a ranch out in the country? I believe different ballistics are favored in each environment. Where the shotgun is appropriate, I would prefer a tactical shotgun like the Mossberg 590 or Remington 870 over the double barreled couch gun.

As far as the OP goes, I have a lot of favorites . . . each shine at their specific application like target, hunting, pin shooting, skeet, personal defense, tactical assault and my all time time fav, the post apocalyptic survival combinations.

I also have a New England arms riot gun. True the pump riot gun is from any objective basis superior to the coach gun but I still like the coach gun.

Scariest city I've been to was DC
Of course I would terrorize the locals by saying good morning.

Yeah, alright, parts of DC are a little on the "brown-trousers tour" too.

The Air Force made go there, my only foreign assignment.

I'm a personal fan of the water gun.
I like mine to be plastic and hopefully red in color.
I'd like the plug to be a good fit, and the grip comfortable.
I'd like it to squirt far enough to hit someone before they can catch me.

Top of the list is one nobody is allowed to have - the AA12. The ultimate in peace through superior firepower.

Behind that is one not legal to possess in California - Taurus Judge 45/410.

Hey Heretic, isn't the AA12 for sale as the Saiga 12? I always thought those were the same. Or that the Saiga was the semi-auto only version at least. Although I believe Red Jacket claims to be able to convert Saigas to class 3 as long as you have the right paperwork.

I know Cali is a bit odd, but why is the Judge illegal there? I'm just curious, what makes it illegal? Other then someone in the Cali govt waving a wand and saying it's so that is.

No, they're not even remotely the same.

Wow, ok that was a dumb statement. (Mine, not yours) I just looked up the AA-12, you're right, not even close. My bad.

Illuminating. Makes sense in a way, especially for an apartment-dweller. I've generally just went ahead and slapped one in wherever I lived anyway, because I know whatever POS landlord I get is gonna keep my deposit. But I can see the problem in an urban high-rise just getting the safe into the building undetected. But I can see your situation more clearly know just by knowing where you live.

One thought occurs to me: have you ever considered a take-down rifle? Even if the maker doesn't offer one, there are gunsmiths who can convert a lever-action to take-down. I saw a late-80's Winchester that had it done. A little pricy, but the results fit into a very mundane case that looked like it was for a musical instrument.

I'm not sure what the advantage would be. I'm not in need of a home defense weapon, if I was I'd get a short 12 gauge, and in case of a break in it would be the thing I'd least want stolen (not that we've had any break ins, I chose a building with ownership that is serious about security).

Oh, nothing to do with home defense. It takes a bit of doing to put together a take-down rifle. I was just saying, it would be a way to keep your property under your control, rather than at the mercy and forethought of others. For a home defense weapon without too many hoops to jump through, a 12 or 20 gauge cruiser is a fine choice. Birdshot/field loads are more than enough, not a lot of penetration to keep your neighbors happy, and they rathole when they strike flesh at close range. You also have the option of less-than-lethal loads (rubber buck, slugs, and koosh balls) that can put a world-class hurtin' on someone without sending them to the great beyond.

I thought you were not a fan of shotguns as home defense?

My carry pistol, and this really needs a name, is a Springfield Arms XD Subcompact.

Just FYI, if that XD is one of the XD-S series, there's a safety recall on it.

Re-opened. Please do not mention legislation about firearms as that gets into the gun control side and as the OP states, this is not about gun control.

Thanks for making CollarMe a better place,

I thought you were not a fan of shotguns as home defense?

For myself personally, no, but it has nothing to do with their efficacy in that role. I've got torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders, and I walk with a cane, to boot. It's simply easier for me to use a handgun. I'm also of the belief that whatever you happen to have that throws lead and is in your hands is the ideal self-defense tool.

When I use the 12 ga. I do have, it's usually with low-brass target and field loads for birds, rabbits, and squirrels, and I usually keep it down to 5 shots or so. Buck and slugs are reserved solely for deer and if a black bear decides to amble into camp. Where I to acquire a self-defense shotgun, I'd seriously consider a 20 ga. because it's less of a bruiser. On the off-chance I need to use Barely Legal in that role, I went and got some of those koosh ball less-lethal loads.

Well, to avoid stepping on the guidance from Gamma, the Wikipedia entry on the gun will have that answer for you.

Ever been in Overtown/Liberty City?

Only place I ever routinely went armed.

Found it, thanks much. Seems an odd bit of reasoning, but understandable considering the source.
