Where does the crazy come in?

It's his userID, she's saying his name, not calling him crazy.

My favorite to shoot short of an Rheinmetall M256 has to be Ma Deuce. Since I'll likely never own one of those...

The favorite gun I own is Christine (named after the Steven King novel), a custom F-Open rifle, presently chambered in 6XC.

My least favorite is my 300 RUM, kicks like a savage mule, but a real tack drive (I think I jump 30X farther each shot off the bench than the bullets do from the point of aim).

The only gun I still own is a Henry .30/30. I kept it over the Winchester .30-06 because I like shooting it more. I found that either was effective against deer at the ranges I hunt at so I kept the one I liked more.

Ammo for it is up to almost $1 per round so I don't go to the range as often as I used to. I might see if my cousin wants to part with one of his .22LR just for target shooting.

The lever gun is nice.

I've never really seen the point for collapsing or folding stocks in civilian use but any sort of recoil dampening on a shotgun could be desirable. Although as you said I'm pretty sure I've seen a recoil dampening shotgun stock somewhere before.

A lot of people think the pistol grip makes it a better home defense gun.
I don't happen to be one of them, not enough control.
The recoil dampening is not new. It's the conversion that is new. It's currently patent pending.

I, myself, have never seen the point of a pistol grip on a shotty. The last time I fired one I nearly knocked my own teeth out. The market suggests that there is a large amount of people that like pistol grips on their Mossbergs. I think the initial market is for police; you can have one shotgun in your car that can quickly become another kind if you need to change your tactics. I am quite happy with my 97. Hell, it was designed by JMB himself. As much as I love my brother he ain't the patron saint of firearms.

DomKen: Get a Lee Basic reloader. It's about 25 bucks and contains everything you need to bring the per-round cost back to around 10-25 cents. You can even use cast-lead bullets in it or even 00 buck if it's been sized (which happens when you load it anyway). A guy at my club uses that to make squib loads for indoor practice and pest control.

Looks like I'll need some more stuff that adds to the cost, they say you need to size the cartridge to make it safe in lever action rifles, but still looks like I could get everything for less than $100 which is pretty decent considering a box of ammo is running $90 last I checked.

I was thinking Lee Classic, and as long as you only use cases you fire through your own rifle you'll be okay. If not, a sizer's another fifteen bucks. Or spring for one of those hand presses. And where are you buying ammo? Even at the height of the drought, the most I've ever seen for 30-30 was thirty bucks a box. Besides, it's a great way to kill time and you can make up loads that cover the gamut of situations, from short-range indoor squibs on up.

Not a gun question, but a deer question. Can anyone explain the DEC's reasoning? Doe permits are still easily available but now you can't shoot a buck unless it has 3 points per side. Makes no sense to me. Although juniors (12 - 18) can take anything.

Oh and since there's a bear living in the back of my property, what are the odds that the guys who hunt here can drop it with the same thing they're using for deer. Bear weigh three times as much, don't they need a bigger gun?

I'd rather they left it alone then annoy the hell out of it.

Do you have a huge deer population?
That would be the only reason I can see for encouraging people to shoot deer.
In New York you just have black bear don't you?
Still it kind of depends on what they are hunting deer with.
A 30/30 or .243 can bring down a deer but a 30-06, also a popular deer round would be far more effective.

They're trying to manage the herd to produce more trophy bucks and keep the population under control.

As long as they don't shoot at its head and shoot it at a reasonable range a black bear should go down from any deer rifle. Bear skulls are notoriously tough so shooting it in the head with anything would be unwise.

Shooting at the head of anything brings your shooting skills into question.

There are imnho only two legitimate reasons for killing anything.
1 if you're going to eat it.
2 To keep it from killing.

At least once (to win a bet) a man has killed an Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear (forget whether it was a Kodiak) with a .17 Mach IV. If you can kill an Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear with a .17 Mach IV, well, you have bigger balls than I. Black Bear are generally not considered too hard to kill. Here in NM, any centerfire rifle or pistol cartridge is a legal cartridge for hunting bear (we have no Brown Bear). I'd personally go for something in the range of .270 Win or better.

That's what I looked up. The sizer is not a huge problem, I can get it from Lee. The cost I said included the kit, sizer, powder and bullets.

The gun store/range where I store my rifle is where I buy ammo. but even online .30-30 ammo is up to $1 a round

Interesting, being that I shoot F-Open myself, and rarely see reference to the sport. And my overall fav is a rifle I built for that, Savage target action rifle in 6mmBR

I used to have several rifles and shotguns. Down to one now. A model 1892 Winchester, adjustable sight on the stock and of course octagon barrel. It was my grandfathers and is worth just under $2000.

KYsissy -> RE: For gun owners, what is your favorite. Not a gun control thread. (10/11/2013 6:17:52 AM)

Springfield M6 scout. .22/.410 over under. Perfect pack rifle, small light and its a tack driver.

After further research on the loader, you're right. And I avoid online ammo purchases because the shipping jacks the price up almost another dollar. I ain't that old, but I remember when 1-2 bucks a shot meant only specialty or obsolete ammo from a custom maker. And you store your rifle at the range? Only time I've done that was when I was on rifle team and didn't wanta hump my old Remington 513T back and forth. I keep my babies close to me.

/yay, nested quotes!

I've always wanted one of those. Do you have the one with the squeezer-bar trigger or the conventional trigger with the pistol grip?

It has the squeeze bar. I think it was made to be useable with mittens on.
I remember reading somewhwere that a similar version was standard issue on the B-52s back in the 1950s,. Before pilots rescuebteams and if they wentbdown, they might have to fend for themselves for a while.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: For gun owners, what is your favorite. Not a gun control thread. (10/11/2013 8:29:49 AM)

The M6 is a cute little gun. I want one myself, but I wouldn't want one for casual shooting. It's a survival rifle meant for last ditch efforts at getting food when your plane goes down.

I wouldn't buy one now because the price has skyrocketed. When they were $150 that was one thing. At over $600 I'll just buy an AR.

KYsissy -> RE: For gun owners, what is your favorite. Not a gun control thread. (10/11/2013 9:05:56 AM)

I paid a little over $100 years ago. I was surprised at how much the price has gone up. But that can happen when they stop making something.

Hillwilliam -> RE: For gun owners, what is your favorite. Not a gun control thread. (10/11/2013 1:26:41 PM)

My favorite has never been fired as it's a work of art more than a firearm.

It is a hand made 50 cal muzzle loader, Kentucky long rifle.
Octagon barrel.
Curly maple one piece stock and forearm
German silver inlay and German silver patch box built into the stock.

Dan'l Boone never say the day when he held a weapon that pretty.

MasterCaneman -> RE: For gun owners, what is your favorite. Not a gun control thread. (10/11/2013 2:12:53 PM)

I agree. It would be nice if another maker (say Henry?) bought the rights to it and started up production again like they did with the AR-7. Looking at the M6, don't you think it'd make an excellent 3D print project (hinthinthintforthe3Dgeeksreadingthis)? Barrels would be easy to come by from other makes, like Rossi or H&R, but a reline kit in a carbon-fiber matrix would work just as well and retain the original lines.
