The only gun I still own is a Henry .30/30. I kept it over the Winchester .30-06 because I like shooting it more. I found that either was effective against deer at the ranges I hunt at so I kept the one I liked more. Ammo for it is up to almost $1 per round so I don't go to the range as often as I used to. I might see if my cousin wants to part with one of his .22LR just for target shooting.

Although as you said I'm pretty sure I've seen a recoil dampening shotgun stock somewhere before.

I, myself, have never seen the point of a pistol grip on a shotty. The last time I fired one I nearly knocked my own teeth out. The market suggests that there is a large amount of people that like pistol grips on their Mossbergs. I think the initial market is for police; you can have one shotgun in your car that can quickly become another kind if you need to change your tactics. I am quite happy with my 97. Hell, it was designed by JMB himself. As much as I love my brother he ain't the patron saint of firearms.

Not a gun question, but a deer question. Can anyone explain the DEC's reasoning? Doe permits are still easily available but now you can't shoot a buck unless it has 3 points per side. Makes no sense to me. Although juniors (12 - 18) can take anything. Oh and since there's a bear living in the back of my property, what are the odds that the guys who hunt here can drop it with the same thing they're using for deer. Bear weigh three times as much, don't they need a bigger gun? I'd rather they left it alone then annoy the hell out of it.

Nah, you can take a bear, or a moose with a .22 if you are excellent in marksmanship. You hit a bear in the heart with a deer rifle or a slug......it will drop. I expect that the younger bucks are not wanting to be hunted so there is deer jizz for future generations, nobody wants grampa humping the does with his knobbed up and unvirile sperm, but wants the deer to get in there and get fawns. Now the younger bucks are less aware of whats up than the older ones, and are more likely to forego any social and political concerns to get that doe pussy, much like the young men hereabouts. So, having them around the shots alot and putting some fear of god into them helps the herd survive and procreate. Does? Any one of them whores is capable of dropping one, two, and three fawns. And in that you are unlikely to take them all out, the herd survives.

I used to have a Maverick 88 (essentially a budget 500) with a pistol grip. While not a hunting tool by any means, I was able to dust clay targets with it enough to say I could probably get by. And I think Mossberg already has the Flex version of the 500, which (if I recall correctly) offers a quick-change option for stocks and barrels, as well as recoil moderation. DomKen: Get a Lee Basic reloader. It's about 25 bucks and contains everything you need to bring the per-round cost back to around 10-25 cents. You can even use cast-lead bullets in it or even 00 buck if it's been sized (which happens when you load it anyway). A guy at my club uses that to make squib loads for indoor practice and pest control. And I agree with you on using a folding stock on a shotgun. They're a compromise at best, and tend to bruise my pretty face when I fire them. I stuck one on an 870 and ended up getting rid of it. But a pistol grip with a conventional stock works pretty well for me.

The reasoning behind the limit is that they are trying to maintain the state deer herd at a certain level. It may or may not work. As for the bear, you live in New York. If licenses are available I'll be happy to take care of your ursine issues. Getting licenses may be difficult, depending on what part of NY you live in. In Syracuse it wouldn't be an issue, if you live in Manhattan it could be a little problematic.

Many grouse and pheasant could stand testament to my Purdey's field experience. Well, they could stand testament if they hadn't been eaten. I had always scoffed at the cost of Purdeys, my first gun was a brand new Beretta. Then some bastard let me shoot his Purdey and that was it.

It was pretty rough on the hands but I've fired 12 gauges with just a pistol grip with little trouble. The point of the pistol grip is speed on target and portability.

Bear skulls are notoriously tough so shooting it in the head with anything would be unwise.

Looks like I'll need some more stuff that adds to the cost, they say you need to size the cartridge to make it safe in lever action rifles, but still looks like I could get everything for less than $100 which is pretty decent considering a box of ammo is running $90 last I checked.

Hmmm, out of all our guns, I'd gave to say that in handguns it would be my 9mm Taurus stainless. In rifles it would have to be the 223 bushmaster.
