I wonder do you see the difference in Reward as compared to simple Appreciation?  Is Recognition any different that Reward?

In short what is a Reward to you?

Reward is something given, more than just praise. Appreciation just exists although it does need to be expressed to be of any benefit to the other party. Recognition can be rewarded and I suppose is similar to appreciation. Too many people in relationships of all kinds take each other for granted and don't show appreciation or reward enough. From a D/S point of view if I've been particularly good and submissive it's nice to feel appreciated, not that one goes around expecting or looking for rewards all the time. But I like the idea that you comply and then are rewarded in some way even if it's simply that he thinks you're wonderful because of what you did for him. I sometimes wonder if this is a difference between submissive and slave behaviour, slave may be not needing or wanting the reward bit so much (which I do need to some extent).

Yes I do see a difference between reward and appreciation.  A reward is a specific something given, whether it is an object, an activity, time spent, being relieved of an unpleasant task or perhaps even just praise.

Being appreciated, or the appreciation of an action or ability of mine, is about another person being aware of something about me and finding it useful, satisfactory or better.  In some cases it may even be something which is useless or unsuccessful but the attempt has been appreciated. It may not even be necessary for the appreciation to be explicitly acknowledged on every occasion...although if appreciation is never acknowledged it's pretty difficult to feel confident of it.

For me, reward (specifically praise) is problematic but I crave appreciation....perhaps because I see it as a sign of being 'known'.

For me a reward is something tangiible whether it is a in the form of  attainment of a  goal or an unexpeced gift
Is Recognition any different that Reward?
Appreiation is verbal recogition .......... which i find rewarding ..but do not consider a reward per se

I'm looking forward to KoM's own views on his thread...as well as others.  These were interesting questions...to me.

While I don't want to hijack the thread...I was especially fascinated with the comment that perhaps slaves don't need or want reward so much as do submissives.  As a submissive who truly thinks she’s no slave, it’s interesting how many times I’m told I have a slavish heart.  I think it’s because, like so many here, I am most delighted by appreciation/ recognition than with reward.

I think that slaves learn that they are being granted the privilege of expressing thier natures. So the very act of being owned is a reward.

I have a feeling that when I am owned I will agree with that statement.

BreakingGlass -> RE: Reward & Appreciation (7/3/2006 6:27:38 PM)

To me:

Appreciation is something I hope he always feels for me.  It's nice to hear him say it, but just being able to look in his eyes or feel how he touches me can be enough to let me know he appreciates me.

Reward is something a little extra, like a special treat.  Usually because he's in a good mood and he likes to give me a little surprise every now and then.

Recognition is more of a public acknowledgement...this is who we are, this is what we mean to each other.

Recognition I don't necessarily need; reward is nice to have; appreciation I couldn't do without.

And it goes both ways...I hope he always realizes that I appreciate him and what he lets me do for him.
