kalikshama -> Petition: Stop & Shop Supermarket Company: Stop carrying anti-gay pasta (9/28/2013 8:41:41 AM)

This was in my inbox this AM and I thought I would share:

https://www.change.org/petitions/stop-shop-supermarket-company-stop-carrying-anti-gay-pasta#share

As an Italian-American mom, some of my favorite memories are of sitting around the dinner table with my husband and our three sons on Sunday after Church. Lots of tomato sauce, lots of laughs and lots of Barilla. In fact, there are several boxes of Barilla sitting in my cabinet right now. That is about to change.

My grandparents moved to Brooklyn, NY from Italy and taught me that family is more important than anything. I remembered that tradition when my son Rich was a teenager and cried at our dinner table as he told me he was gay.

This morning Rich called me and told me Guido Barilla, the head of Barilla pasta, said terrible things about gay people. Barilla said, “I would never do an advert with a homosexual family…if the gays don’t like it they can go an eat another brand. For us the concept of the sacred family remains one of the fundamental values of the company.” I have a newsflash for Guido Barilla: I am proud of my gay son and we are a traditional family.

Even though my sons are adults now, no one messes with any of my boys. I shop at Stop & Shop, and now that I dumped Barilla, I think they should, too. Please join me and urge Stop & Shop to take Barilla off their shelves.

A non-supermarket-specific petition: No Barilla Pasta for Us!

The guy was taken out of context. Essentially the traditional nuclear family is the demographic that Barilla Pasta wants to advertise to.

I think its strange what he said about "adoption by gay families because it concerns a person who is not able to choose".. well heck.. I never had the ability to choose my parents either.. if I had the ability to choose them they would have been rich!!!! [;)]

I had not really thought about that. So. . . if it was a child 8 (the age of reason) or older then gay adoption would be okay?

Perhaps there is something going on in the Italian society that would shed light on his statement.

The only thing I know about off the top of my head is the Italian male inability to continue keeping mistresses. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24206368

Because gay people can't have families, right. There are no married gay couples with 2 kids and a dog in a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence and all that stuff.

On Friday, the company posted a video apology from Barilla on its Facebook page, in which he said he had "heard the countless reactions around the world to my words, which have depressed and saddened me. ... It is clear that I have a lot learn about the lively debate concerning the evolution of the family." ~NBC News

Hang the bastard!!!

Perhaps his accountant had a chat with him over a plate of pasta and alfredo sauce.[;)]

Another apology after the fact. Often the case after homophobic remarks.

Snopes even said the company issued a "clarification" (A typical evassive form of apology) << Snopes words not mine.

It seems to me that this is a case where an older person was speaking off the cuff and said something stupid. Unless it comes out that Barilla financially supports anti LGBT groups or the like, like the Chik-fil-a CEO did, then I'll continue to buy the products.

A competitor had a delicious response. The image was posted on its FB site with the caption "Love and pasta for all!" [:)]

Or he had an unscripted moment and unwittingly showed his disregard for some of his (now likely former) customers.

That would be my view of it.

I certainly do not agree with their sentiment, however they are a private company and have every right to advertise as they desire.

Those who are disgusted, dont purchase their product and let your message be conveyed by a reduction of profits.

I heard the initial comments from the owner of Barilla when he was specifically asked why the company hadn't made a commercial featuring a gay couple.

I'm not seeing how their advertising choices/budget makes them anti-gay.

On the other hand, I can't really name any other product that has specifically made a commercial featuring a gay couple. I'm sure there probably is some, I just can't recall any. Does that mean that all those companies are also anti-gay?

Cheerios got a huge amount of flak not too long ago when the did a very cute commercial featuring an interracial couple. They ended up pulling the commercial and doing various announcements. If "mainstream" can't even handle an interracial commercial, why would any company want to jump feet first into this?
