Wow. Can you imagine the pressure this person might be under if they existed now?

It should be noted that only some Republicans are afraid of science. Randy Hultgren (R-IL) is a cosponsor of the bill and is really quite good on science issues.

Don't think its fear, or dislike of science.

Nothing in the article suggests either. Rather another talking head is just what we need. Considering we already have a climate czar (Todd Stern) do we really need another?

Maybe the opinion of a republican member of the House Science Committee will help?

Afraid of science, or afraid that the position will push political goals, rather than science?

The article even mentions it.

That was my read... which is right from the article. That being said I do find this rampant paranoia about scientists pretty out of hand. I also think that if we truly believe the entire scientific establishment is corrupt we damned well better get that fixed because I'm unwilling to use alternatives like ouija boards.

Oh, come on, now. Ouija Boards can be fun when paired up with some alcohol and horny chicks. Sure, you might have to battle some demons and other Hell spawn, but, hey, it isn't as much fun if it's always easy.

The GOP is already employing your suggestion when it draws up its social policies . However, to avoid stepping on one of the many religious sensitivities of the looney Right, they have given this practice a different name.

I believe they call it "using a Republican think tank".

If its something that actually helps America out, I expect Republicans to do anything and everything in their power to undermine, attack, discredit, and remove before Americans find out its something useful and good. If the Theory of Evolution is so bad, why is it Republicans and conservatives benefit from the knowledge found in using it? If conservatives in the Midwest are so against the Theory of Climate Change, why are they not angry when engineers use the knowledge to make civil structures more resistant to damaging wind and tornados? Or those conservatives in Florida whose house are now being designed to resist even category four hurricanes?

My bid would be to have Bill Nye to the position as he's clearly dealt with dumb conservatives in the past when explaining science.

Oh yes...afraid of promoting the controlling of greenhouse gasses, so mankind might actually be alive in another hundred years. Or afraid of education on global warming, so we don't stick our heads in the sand and say "It's not manmade" when clearly it is. Since the year 1750, when the industrial revolution began and humans started polluting the air, poisonous gasses have also increased in our atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is up over 40%. Methane is up over 150%. And nitrous oxide is up approximately 20%. It doesn't take a scientist to realize that's leaving less and less room for that OXYGEN stuff we need to breathe in order to stay alive.

Neocons are in the pockets of corporations such as "big oil," so will always oppose any legislation to help the environment. The only problem with this is that we NEED the environment. We need clean air to breathe and water to drink, and we need a habitable planet on which to grow crops so we have food. Once we pass the tipping point where our environment is permanently ruined, we will suffer a slow and painful death as a species.

Remember you proudly support the conservatives when the economy collapses and we can't afford food, we have no air to breathe or water to drink, our children are illiterate, and everything else happens when there are no regulations in place to protect us.

Neocons want America's landscape to be just like that of Russia and China. Maybe conservatives should go visit both those countries and compare their environmental protections (or lack there of) to that of the United States. I do not think many of them could vote for Republicans after that if they really love the American landscape.

Or maybe not. One thing is for sure, discussion of any nature has been silenced.

Bye bye open discourse.

From the article...

"The proposal should have passed easily. But last week, Larry Hart, a former Republican congressional aide and current representative of the American Conservative Union (the country's oldest politically conservative lobbying group), sent a letter to House Republicans claiming that this position is far from benign. Hart writes that the laureate, appointed by President Obama, "will share his view that science should serve political ends, on such issues as climate change and regulation of greenhouse gases.""

Doesn't have shit to do with being afraid of science but once again a lib has to lie to get his point across.
