She grew up in a time where it was common to stop school at 8th grade, so she hasn;t finished. and truth be told she is emotionally and educationally not at 8th grade, she might be more at 5th grade, and i was telling her she should go back to school and she told me it was to late, and it didn't matter now, she was to old and stupid.

And you know damned strait i told her no you're not.

You might check with some of the online schools. I'm not sure what all of their policies are, but it might be a place to start.

You told her she should finish, and she took it the wrong way and picked on herself. I'm not sure she wants to. It's be a lot of studying - what would she get from it? Would it help her get a better job, is it something she's talked about wanting to do?

It sounds like she took your statement as criticism. if you want to bring it up again, try something like, "Mom, I'm planning to go back and complete my schooling. I'd love to have you alongside me, and we could do this together." That way, it sounds more like you're asking for her help.

Call the local school or college (preferably junior or community colleges) and ask about the GED programs. They will work with you.

Lizard got her HS diploma from an online high school after I yanked her out of her school (when the teachers bully students for sexual orientation, that is my final straw). She has some college but she also has a learning disability so she has to work with tutors.

I'll just add that it IS a lot of work going to school, and it's harder work when the student is older. Mom would really have to want to get something out of this venture and if she doesn't have a strong desire for the diploma motivating her, it'll never be something that she sticks with.

At this point she'd get a GED instead - she takes an exam that covers high school level material, instead of formally going back to high school. One can study on one's own or go through a guided study program.

Does she want to get her diploma? She may not. There are benefits to having a diploma or GED, but there's also a time and effort cost, and it's a choice for her to make.

Community college should be able to give her some credit for life experience.

However, if she doesn't want to do it, you can't motivate her.

My mother didn't finish high school because she came down with polio. Years later, we knew other women her age who were going for college degrees and I suggested she reconsider school. She had such bad memories of barely passing math that she could not face returning to school.

A sense of accomplishment.

I would actually tell her that she's not what she thinks she is (and show a ton of support)...and this is a way to prove it.

There are GED courses online and usually adult education classes are usually available at community colleges.

When I was in high school, we did have a woman in her 60s finishing up some credits in our classes. We loved having her there.

But, just be aware that someone who left at 8th grade has 4 grades to make up, so it will be a challenge.

No, she was flattered i thought she could, but she has been told all her life you're to stupid to do.......... you're to stupid to do that, and she believes she is retarded, because her whole life her family had told her and she has grown up believing it and she believes, it's to late and why bother and she is to old to accomplish any higher learning. She is letting her self doubt and old mental tracks stop her, and that's a crying shame.

The way i was doing it, and it's different for each person, was adult ed independent studies, but i had to finish up the 5 subjects i was short of credits in, and then i had to study for the exit exam and take and pass exit exam. i could take as long or as fast as i wanted to finish the subjects, but i had to take a test to prove i knew the subject b4 moving on. I was missing credits in science, and history, and us government and art and economics. and then of course math. since math was the hardest and most frustrating and quit inducing, we went with the other subjects first cuz they was easy peasy.

she says she should, but she prolly isn't motivated or dedicated to do the work, no:(

I'm trying to get my head around this post. Your mom , I guess might be pushing age 50 and made it through the 8th grade, but has an education level according to you that is maybe at the 5th grade level and now wants to go to high school. WOW

She would take remedial classes that are usually offered through GED courses at local colleges or high schools. She would need to go through the state GED department and they can lead her to where she can get remedial classes so she can pass the GED.

If she wants to get her GED, I say give her all the support the needs.
Summer of 2012 at the tender age of 61, I went back to school with my daughter and took Calculus 1. After finishing that, we took Calc 2 and 3 and Physics 1 and 2. We had a great time.

That's why my mom did it in her 50s.

She left school at the age of 12 to work and help support the family. At the age of 20 she moved to this country, learned English and raised a family. In her 50s she thought she'd take a high school level English class to learn better grammar, spelling, etc. Taking this course motivated her to get her high school diploma.

I can't remember what program she went to, but I think there was a program called "Second Start" (or something like that) at our local high school, and she went there - the oldest one in the class. She gave a speech at the graduation ceremony that was very touching.

She's turning 80 this year, and is still very proud of that accomplishment.

OP, your local senior center might be a very good place to start and ask about GED choices/resources.

No, she is 74, like i said in the title of this thread.

Yes, i would guess that based on the level she can function educationally she is more 5th grade. She can barely spell, barely write, she can't do math, she can barely read, she needs help with the most simple of words when she reads. And that's not just me being mean. She would not be up to a 8th grade education level.

I saw this today and thought of your mom.

http://news.yahoo.com/99-old-iowa-woman-gets-high-school-diploma-162511730.html

From what you have said, it sounds like your mom may have some substantial learning disabilities.
I think it is sad, however that your mom does not see any value in trying.

One of the major differences between how the educational system in this country and countries in Asia is this: in this country there is an assumption that being able to get good grades means that one is "smart". In the Asian countries, it is assumed that working hard will bring success and 'the struggle' is very much a part of that process.
