Phydeaux -> IBD calls for a special prosecutor (9/19/2013 8:56:59 AM)

USA Today reported Wednesday, "show the agency flagged political groups based on the content of their literature, raising concerns specifically about 'anti-Obama rhetoric,' inflammatory language and 'emotional' statements made by nonprofits seeking tax-exempt status."

A 2011 IRS document named 162 groups — along with comments by IRS lawyers in Washington. Just 11 of those were liberal or "progressive" in political orientation. The political bias is absolutely clear.

Not only were local IRS officials pressured from Washington to investigate conservative groups, they did so using explicit criteria: Any group critical of Obama and his administration got investigated and had its application for tax-exempt status put on a slow track. It would be sidelined for the election.

Lois Lerner, former head of the IRS' tax-exempt organizations division, still gets an IRS paycheck. But in a just-released Feb. 1, 2011 email sent to fellow IRS exec and Obama supporter Holly Paz, she calls the tea party groups "very dangerous," adding hopefully: "Perhaps the (Federal Election Commission) will save the day."

Not exactly the words of an unbiased public servant.

Hardly a month goes by without other such blockbuster revelations of IRS misconduct. This scandal reeks of criminality and, at the very least, constitutes an attempt by a government agency to sway the 2012 election.

Enough. We need a special prosecutor to get to the bottom of this, once and for all.

Ain't it amazing how this went from being a serious matter, when the IRS told their first set of lies about what was going on, to being a "phony scandal," when the stupid lies were exposed, and the government official who told them took the 5th in front of Congress?

No decent American of any political stripe should be anything but outraged by this sort of activity, and the demands for a full investigation ought to come from both sides of the aisle, and the water cooler.

Nothing in the USA Today Article said anything of the sort. [sm=alarm.gif]

The statement above is only supported by an unsubstantiated IBD editorial that cites no primary sources at all.

only to complete morons. The fact is 501(c)4 organizations are not, by law, supposed to engage in politics. Liberal and progressive groups did not seek the status because they did not want to hide their donors and they chose to not break the law, the reason the tea party groups sought the status.

The real scandal is why any political group was granted the status at all.

Yet, of the groups that were held up, only liberal groups were denied status (3, I believe). Makes you wonder how the rest got through the system, doesn't it?

That's a dumb statement. Would you prefer to pay taxes, or to keep your tax money? In a noble manner, I'm sure you have no problem paying your taxes, and I'm not questioning that. But, if you are trying to raise money, wouldn't it be easier to raise money if you weren't required to pay taxes, and donations carried tax exemptions?

You want to know who donates? How much you want to bet the IRS has a data-mining expert (if not an entire department)? Isn't there a section in your tax returns where you have to declare where your donations went? I know I have to identify the Salvation Army on mine.

With Lerner and her boss being W appointees, no, not so much.

So, the person (Lerner) claiming (admitting) the IRS was mistreating applications from certain conservative groups improperly, was holding progressive/liberal groups to a higher standard? Is that what you're claiming?

mnottertail -> RE: IBD calls for a special prosecutor (9/20/2013 5:43:17 AM)

Nope. How is it you can be so easily confused by simple English? Republican dirty tricks is all, same-same.

Donors to 501(c)4 organizations do not get tax deductions for their donations.
http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Other-Non-Profits/Donations-to-Section-501(c)(4)-Organizations

So the donors do not have to put those donations on their returns. As I've written many times the sole reason these organizations sought 501(c)4 status was to keep their donors anonymous which is not allowed for legally operating political organizations.

As to the organizations in question, there is a specific non profit status that allows for political activity(527) and no organization that does not make a profit has to pay any tax.

Missed another one. My fault. Thanks for the civil correction.

Nothing to see here, people. Keep on a-movin'...

Desi,

I've already answered this question about 501c3 and 501c4.

It is sworn testimony, taken during the IRS hearings that not having the appropriate cert from the government discqualified groups from grants, and had significant impacts on the groups ability to raise money.

The claim about whether they are tax exempt or not is just an attempt to spin that there was no harm caused by the IRS action. When in fact, there was a great deal of harm, as has already been proven in depositions in the class action lawsuit on this matter.

Doesn't change the fact that I was wrong, though.

Present a grant that a political organization is eligible for only if the have 501(c)4 status.

As to having trouble fund raising, good! Donors who will only donate to organizations breaking the law should not be allowed to influence elections.

Additionally, according to info release August 19, the discrimiinatory policies that were put in place is still in effect, in contradiction of Obamas appointee Danny Werflen?

I thought it was Werful that came in, noticed it was still in place, and sent out an immediate cease memo about it.

Proven in depositions?
Has the case been settled?
If not then how can anything have been proved?

cloudboy -> RE: IBD calls for a special prosecutor (9/20/2013 6:55:46 PM)

For him, allegations are fact.
