Rich33Rich -> Do you ever feel bad about anything you've gotten away with? (9/16/2013 2:30:11 PM)

Once when I was still an intern and I was visiting a trader in the hospital to drop off some paperwork he needed to look over, I slowly backed into a car while I was pulling mine out of the garage. I was so goddamn tired after working a 12 hour day and then making the trip to the hospital that all I thought was "Fuck it. That can't have been too bad." So I drove off. To be honest all I was thinking of was my own car, and it never even occurred to me that I might have messed up the other guy's car because my bumper was made to absorb damage while doors/mirrors/whatever else on his car might crumble.

When I woke up the next day I was freaked out because it started to sink in that I might have damaged the other car, and also that I'd left the scene of an accident. I honestly had no idea what to do, so I called my lawyer. He told me to calm down, made some phonecalls, and assured me that he'd made some inquiries and there was not much chance of any cameras in that particular garage picking up my plate numbers or anything. He also said the best way to deal with it would be to find the other guy and explain what had happened, but since I never even saw the car I hit (just felt the jolt from it) neither of us had any goddamn idea how to do that short of going to the cops and saying "Hey I left the scene of an accident if anyone reports getting dinged in this parking garage on this date it was probably me." Obviously that would have been a stupid move, so I just shrugged my shoulders and hoped the other guy had insurance.

Are there any things from your past you got away with that you kind of feel bad about now?

No, not really. The closest I can think of was the one time I was coming home from the bar and managed to clip three mirrors in a row. I parked my truck, inspected for damage, found none, but I knew I'd messed the others up pretty bad. I block-printed the word SORRY ABOUT THAT on three envelopes, stuck $25 in each, and flipped them under the wipers. I've been remarkably guilt-free since then. And statute of limitations is long passed, so no one can go running to the locals now.

We'll just add it to your NSA/FBI/ATF/IRS/CIA file. It will come back to haunt you [:D]

FR:
The question "do you feel bad about anything you've gotten away with?" isn't all that helpful.
"If you feel bad about it, why didn't you do anything about it?" is a lot more interesting, in my experience...

I'm not too worried about piddly shit like that. I've seen the abstract of my FBI file (for my pistol permit). It's pretty impressive who I've been linked to just because my choice of vocations put me in general proximity.

Yes. I've also had people get away with stuff at my expense. I'd like to think it evens out in the end, but I don't know.

^^^This. It had to do with door dings. Though safe to say I've been dinged more than I've dinged others.

Nope. If I did it...I own it. If I get caught...I better own that too. :)

I did get away with shoplifting when I was a kid, maybe about 5 or so. I was out playing one morning and another kid from the neighborhood, a girl about my age, said she was walking down to the A&P. (Nowadays, that would be unheard of - 2 5-year-olds walking to a grocery store 3/4 of a mile from their house.) We got there, and of course, neither of us had any money. I didn't really quite grasp the concept of "stealing" just yet, but I knew that you had to have money in order to get stuff from a store. But then I came up with an idea I thought was absolutely brilliant: "Why don't we just put the bags of M&Ms under our shirts? Then we don't have to pay." So that's what we did and walked out of the store trying not to look guilty. We got those big bags of M&Ms, too, not the small ones.

Of course, I reasonably concluded that my parents would be so proud of me for my ingenuity and resourcefulness, so I gleefully announced at the dinner table that night, "I got free M&Ms!" I did not anticipate their negative reaction to what I thought was a gainful enterprise. They were actually pretty upset about it, so that pretty much quashed my criminal career in its tracks. I can't say that I feel bad about it today, although I can never have M&Ms without thinking of that little escapade in my wayward youth.

No. (I left a note. You should have as well).

Not that I can remember. Then again, I did so many things when I was young and drunk that there are probably things I did that I don't even remember. There are long periods of time that I don't remember. I think that may be a good thing. [8D]
