TheBanshee -> Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 9:51:58 AM)

I reluctantly opened a Facebook account a year or so ago. I joined because I was missing out on family pics that people had been posting and on the surface its a good thing, touching base with some old friends and finding out what people are up to.

Now, I have a friends list - which is great really. Some are mere acquaintances but that's okay too. I have a few that, although nice people, post no less than 20 or 30 comments a day. Such news-breaking events like "went and got great corn at the supermarket today - going to grill tonight!", and "I'm feeling lazy today, just going to watch TV", and "like if you love your daughter".

I'm also wondering why some people are so intent on over sharing every single aspect of their day. Things I don't really want to know. I don't want to know you're having a fight with your husband/girlfriend/wife/boyfriend and what an SOB s/he is, and all the details of what happened. Your are posting this to all YOUR "friends".

Then there are the others whose life is sooooo incredibly fantastic they have to stop and post what a great time they are always having to make others aware that their life is so full.

Just a bit of a rant - anyone else?

TheHeretic -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 10:12:16 AM)

I started on Facebook when my brother was deployed in Iraq, as a way to stay in touch. My biggest gripe with the posts of friends (and my list is confined to people I actually know - mostly old friends and far away family) is when the page gets spammed with political shares. That's what forums where people know what they are getting into are for.

FR

I have about a dozen or so folks who've posts I've hidden because their minutiae bored me.

On the plus side, Facebook has been a good source of support during my oncology adventures. In addition to posts to and from friends, there's a great group for folks tackling the same issues.

ETA: For me, the increasingly exasperating aspect of Fb life is that I'm less and less sure I'm seeing what I want to see vs. what Fb thinks I should see. Now and then, I'll drop by a friend's page and discover all manner of posts that never showed up in my feed.

theshytype -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 10:40:04 AM)

I've contemplated deleting my account for the same annoyances you've mentioned.
I use it strictly to post photos and occasional funny happenings since our families are spread out over several states.

There's the all-political one who constantly bashes their opposing party, the "my life is so perfect" one who has more issues in RL than a magazine, the "FML" one who constantly complains about how horrible their life is, the one with such horrible grammar you can't decode what she's saying, one who can't live without FB posting every hour, the eater because its important everyone knows (and sees) what they're eating all day long, and so on.
I've blocked a few from my newsfeed.

kallisto -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 12:22:18 PM)

I opened an account a few years ago after my adult kids "insisted" that I do. I have kids, other family, and friends all over the country. It's a way to stay "up and in the know" with them. For the others that post endlessly about things I don't really care about, I have either blocked or just bypass their posts ... kind of like I do here. I read what interests me and move on past the rest.

TNDommeK -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 12:32:26 PM)

I have a few ppl that insist on sharing their drama with the world. I hate that. I try to spread positive stuff.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 1:31:49 PM)

I hate Facebook for the very reasons everyone here has described. Unfortunately, having a FB page is a necessary evil for my band, but our cellist has more tolerance for the BS than the other bandmates, so she's offered to take on the page monitoring. All I have to do is post the upcoming concerts.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 6:26:35 PM)

Everyone I need to be in regular contact with, I am in regular contact with. I do not see the need for Facebook in my personal life.

And as for the things that people share on sites like that - there are a lot of very bored people in the world with waaaaaaaay too much time on their hands. Very sad, actually.....

littlewonder -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 6:46:15 PM)

I had a cousin and an aunt who I had to unfriend because every single day they were complaining about their marriage or having an argument with their daughter over FB, each bickering back and forth. I finally decided I had enough.

I had another friend I unfriended because she was constantly posting the "If you are a patriot, then **** (I won't put it here or lest be accused of being a terrorist lol) Obama" and all kinds of conspiracy theory stuff. She's just insane. I couldn't stand it anymore.

Another I removed because his writing was almost impossible to read. I just couldn't stand to see it anymore.

There are some people that are just sad and they need someone to rant to on a daily basis. They are unhappy with their lives. There are some who are attention whores and drama llamas. They need that attention. Just best to delete them. Some are lonely and have no one else in their lives. They need to share their lives with someone so why not FB?

As for those posting how happy they are, I kinda love those types. I love to see others happy with their lives. I guess I'm one of those "annoying" ones who posts when she's happy and happy things have happened to her. Sometimes I'm just bursting and I want to share it with everyone I love and care for. Why wouldn't I? I would hope they would share the same with me.

MasterCaneman -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 7:56:56 PM)

I had to get a FB account when I went back to school. I check it once a month (maybe). There are maybe four people I bother following, and they update about as much as I do, which is rarely.

DesFIP -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 8:10:52 PM)

I opened it when my daughter went to college so I could keep up with her life, and see the horse videos that otherwise I wouldn't have seen.

Now that she's home doing pre-reqs for grad school, I never check it.

littlewonder -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 8:50:29 PM)

I admit I like my FB. It's fun to keep up with my old friends from back home and to see what's going on with my family and what my daughter and her boyfriend are up to.

I get to read things like "I didn't think it was possible, but I got my hair stuck in the car door today!". [:D]

slavekate80 -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 9:10:36 PM)

I used to have a FB account but I closed it and am none the worse for the loss. Most of what came through the feed was minutiae that I didn't care about or game updates and invites. I also didn't like the idea of having co-workers, friends, and family members all on the same friends list, and there's no graceful way to reject your boss's friend request. Facebook can be useful, but for me it was more annoyance than it was worth. I e-mail and text some family members on a fairly regular basis so I know if something happens that I need to know about, they'll tell me.

xXsoumisXx -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/15/2013 10:17:01 PM)

I enjoy facebook. I can keep in touch with friends and family in other states. I can like pages according to my interests. I get a cnet feed, and thanks to it I got my refurbished note 2 for 99 cents. They sold out in less than 24 hours. Some people I had to check the box that says "do not receive posts on news feed". Occasionally I have to remove a post. During elections and certain trials, more were blocked than usual...;).
I also get news feeds from all of my fav sports teams..authors..newspapers and television stations. There is a local online newspaper that has breaking news in my neighborhood, traffic, weather warnings, etc.
If you know how to adjust what you see, it works out well.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/16/2013 5:43:21 AM)

... never mind.

NuevaVida -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/16/2013 6:24:08 AM)

I'm on fb quite a lot. I'm not linked with people who complain a lot, in fact that's pretty much the case in my every day life.

I also post about good and happy things going on. Some unhappy people unfriended me because of it and I'm totally ok with that. I also unfriended a long time friend for making a shitty comment about my happiness. It's my page where I go to express myself and I tend to keep those expressions very positive. To suggest that someone is posting happy stuff with the intention of making others feel bad is just so foreign to me. Others own their own feelings. They will react how they react. The people in my life support my joy as I support theirs, so it's all good.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/16/2013 8:50:03 AM)

p.s. the one demographic I know who are on FB pretty much constantly are under the age of 22 (i.e. middle school, high school and college students). A different demographic with different needs. I get that, actually.

For me, there is a difference between posting positive occurrences and positive daily affirmations.

For example, the person on my feed that annoys me posts the following everyday, nothing more.  These are things that have been said enough times and is already a given,  seems a little odd to go into a news feed when it's not really news:
"I love my husband so much.  He is the greatest man ever."
"I'm so proud of my kids.  I am truly blessed."
"My life is so great.  I'm truly blessed."

But, there are others on my feed that post only positive messages that I enjoy because they are occurrences and I am happy for them:
"I just finished my first 5k!"
"My husband just sent me these flowers just because he's awesome"
"(child's name) just got all A's.  I'm so proud of him!"
"I had the best day at work today!"

I would love to remove several friends from my account.  Unfortunately, they're family members.   It's been done before, not by me, and caused huge family drama.   Drama I'd rather not invite.

As for the person posting a shitty comment about your happiness, that's awful and I would have deleted them as well.
Everyone should use their page for how they want, I just don't expect everyone to enjoy what others may. You just can't please everyone.

heartcream -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/16/2013 10:06:13 AM)

My mom who is 80 wants me on fb so I am there. I would not be there except my moms wants me there.

It is a good way for our family to stay in touch since we are all over this glorious planet.

OsideGirl -> RE: Facebook and our "friends" (9/16/2013 10:52:08 AM)

I like it. It allows me to stay in touch with families and friends.

I have Master's cousin hidden. She's extremely religious/conservative and the day she posted "Obama likes live birth abortions" was the last straw for me. I didn't want to offend her by deleting her, so I just hid her.

Unfriended someone I considered a friend. She's militant vegan and was going off on anti-gun tirades. And here's my thing: it's okay to have a different opinion than I do, but if you're going to preach, at least do some research to know what you're talking about.
