When looking at a profile sometimes there is mileage given between your profile and the profile you are looking at. Is it possible to have that mileage wrong between the two conversing parties? Someone tells you they are in Country X. Their profile states they are 310 miles away. Isn't that distance IP address to IP address? Also how can one damage an SD card for one's phone and still have the phone otherwise operational? Supposedly my SD is damaged and now I don't see hundreds of pictures on my phone. Help!?? I'm thinking I messed it up somehow when I was trying to sync my droid phone to Google mail on my pc. I was trying to get the calendar to auto-sync. It has synced before but I must have turned something off. When I go to my phone settings it says the device calendar is unable to sync.

I can't give you advice for your SD but about the mileage with the ip address maybe they are using a proxy to avoid some restrictions on websites or for privacit reasons and they set the location in the united states. If for example I want to play online poker on a .com and not .it to avoid high taxation I would have to use one and I would appear with an ip address from the USA.

The SD card doesn't usually hold anything critical to the phone's function.

I have seen some crazy distances as well. And that was on my PC. I have no idea how CM computes the distances but i do not believe it is a problem on your end. It is a pretty rare thing to see for me, so if it is a regular occurence I might begin to wonder. The city in my profile is correct so if you get within 20-30miles of the true distance I would say it is working fine, if you want to checkf

I had this happen before when a person claimed to be in IL (my state) and the mileage was 1400 miles. Oh yeah, he was visiting his Mom in HI. For a year.....[8\|].

As stef pointed out, on an Android phone the operating system and essential system files are held on the fixed internal storage, not the removable SD card, so the phone should function even if an SD card becomes damaged. SD cards really aren't designed to hold sensitive data on a disk seeing extensive use - apart from being relatively slow, the file system they use lacks support for permissions and, critically for data integrity, journaling. As a result, getting a message about the SD card being damaged isn't uncommon. In many cases, it may simply be a damaged file system rather than an actual hardware failure. If you take out the SD card and connect it to a computer, you may be able to recover most of the data and then reformat the card and copy the data you were able to recover back to it. In part because of the issues with SD cards, Google has been discouraging their use with Android devices. Google's Nexus line doesn't support them, and many other flagship phones, like the HTC One, LG G2, and Moto X similarly lack SD card support. That said, SD cards are a convenient and inexpensive way to hold large media files – but it's a good idea to back the files up periodically if you care about them.

I noticed that the distance computed is based on the zip code you enter in your account section but you can fill in any old place you like in your visible profile. That explains the user 7 miles from me that lives in Alaska. (I'm in Mississippi)

On the topic of backup... On my galaxy I automatically back up pics to my dropbox.

If you do mount the SD card on a computer and a bunch of files seem to be missing, you might also try some recovery software that ignores the likely corrupt file structure and instead tries to reconstruct files directly from the data stored on the disk. A couple of free options include PhotoRec and Recuva. Good luck recovering your files!
