This is another problem with both the UK and America. Do we really need to be nannied to this extent? The reason the bikes are being stopped is because someone's frightened of a civil case against them. Basically everyone's terrified of being sued.

This ridiculous crave for absolute security has been born from an epidemic of fear. That coupled with the fear of being sued, governs so many choices we make. We have become prisoners of our own making.

Whilst the general public refuse to take the blame for anything that goes wrong and whilst that very public threaten or even take up legal action because little Timmy lost his front tooth when on an adventure day out with the scouts, the over precautions that our local councils make will become more and more restrictive. Instead of taking more responsibility for your own action. The fear of law suits diminishes our freedom.

An example of where I live, there are outdoor climbing walls purposely built for tourists and locals. There is a sign saying, 'Adult supervision for children under the age of 16. Climb at your own risk and do not climb if you don't have all the correct equipment--->see here. If someone climbs it without the right equipment and has an accident, the person who had that accident will, if they survive, get a real telling off. The wall doesn't close down. More restrictions aren't put on that wall but the locals will talk about the stupid man who climbed up whilst drunk and without a rope. People here are expected to be responsible for their own actions. People here will only take out lawsuits in very rare instances.

Whilst I agree with your post to an extent, we in the UK aren't into suing everyone for every little mishap that happens.
Unlike the US where everyone treads on eggshells for fear of being sued.
It's not that common in the UK... fortunately.

I agree, many people need to take responsibility for their actions too.

Take the bike thing....
If little johnny drowned whilst riding his bike along the river bank, what happens??
In the UK, there would probably be some local by-law banning bikes from that part of the river.
In the US, the parents would be sueing the local authority for $millions for willful neglect.

But who is at fault??
To me, it's all down to the parents.
A) for not teaching sensible bike safety.
B) for not teaching safety around water.
C) for letting little johnny go riding his bike in a dangerous place without supervision.

As a deterant, it might help stop crime or reduce it.

it comes down to the big money, and government having the ability to enforce its own interloping when there is money to be made and power to be gained in what otherwise would be a tort and caveat emptor for future bikers, hence its your choice based upon your talents and abilities, not some blood sucking cancer we call government.

Love it!!

It is actually illegal for an adult to ride a bike on a public footpath (sidewalk to you).
So yes, I would support the ban on riding bikes on that footpath. [:D]

I don't see it as big brother, or nanny state etc.
It's just sensible.
Why??
Because not all adults are sensible!!

We shouldn't need a nanny state but some people are just plain stupid and can't be trusted.
That's why these laws get to be there - stupidity!

yeh keep your bike off the freeway and away from cars doing 70 - 100 kmh
