Texas Parents Sue Little League For $1M After Son Hit With Line Drive

Twelve-year-old Emmett Parsutt Jr. was the starting pitcher in a pivotal game for the Santa Fe All-Stars of Texas City, Texas. The contest would determine whether his team advanced to the regional championship in Pearland, Texas.

But the July 1 game ended in the fifth inning for Emmett when a line drive off an opposing player's bat smashed into his head, knocking him to the ground. His team later lost the game.

"The ball ricocheted off Emmett's head and went over a 20-foot fence approximately 100 feet away," according to the lawsuit his family has filed against Little League Baseball of South Williamsport, Pa., and its local affiliate League City Little League.

I started little league as soon as I was old enough, from that time till I was on the high school squad, I probably got hit by line drives at least 8 times, granted not in the head.

Short of putting all players in helmets, what exactly is there to be done?

Kids are going to get hit playing sports, the local leagues offers a group insurance for players.

Sports can be dangerous and parents should be aware of the dangers. As for liability as long as the children are taught safety and provided with the proper equipment the risk is acceptable I would think. It is important that children learn to play as a teem, learn competition, and develop friendships as they grow.

Things have changed somewhat since I was a child.. We had no batting helmets or good fields to play on. I was hit in the gut with a bat and got a concussion blocking home plate after a wild pitch...I lost an inch of tendon from my left throwing hand while swinging bottles at a championship celebration. There went my semi pro carrier.

But I got even... I had a hell of a fastball. After the damaged tendon I could not grip the ball properly. My fastball would sometimes tail 2 feet one way or the other... Could not control it... After chipping a shoulder blade on one kid and putting another in the hospital with a ruptured kidney I decide to play first base...lol.. Now if I could have only hit the damn little ball.

I think the case will be thrown out, personally, since there is a liability waiver.

I personally think that people in this country have the "I will Sue" syndrome trying to get rich.

I agree but if a coach made my grandson run around a stadium in 110 degree heat until he had heat stroke I would do more than sue... There have been many instances where children have been hurt by overzealous coaches.

But... most suits are ridiculous and you are right... people want to sue over a blister at times.

Not surprised at all and it is frankly a stupid suit, and if judges had any balls they would hit the lawyer bringing the suit with a 10k fine for a frivolous lawsuit, the fucking lawyers have absolutely no sense of morals, all they care about here is 60% of the take. Playing sports has certain risks, and where is the negligence here? I could see if some coach had the kids running laps in 100 degree heat or had kids hatting without batting helmets, but this kind of thing happens.A kid ended up with brain damage when a batted ball hit him in the chest and forced him into cardiac arrest and took time to be revived.

There has been a lot of hot air about using aluminum bats because they allow hitting the ball harder then a wooden bat does, especially with kids, but the point is few things don't have some risks. The same people who will see nothing wrong with this will be the same one whining if Little League has to raise fees to cover the insurance, or worse, has to disband. I have heard lots of people sneer about the nanny society, about how they won't let kids play, but these are the same jackwagons who will sure at the drop of a hat. It is kind of ironic that this lawsuit is from Texas, where people often seem to pride themselves on being exactly the opposite of this......

What if it were your child?
I'd sue to protect his health care and future.

it's different when its your own child.

~FR~

I played, and my team was in the PeeWee Reese World Series that year and won. I did not get to play as my nose got crushed from a line drive. Not just broken but crushed and both cheek bones fractured. No law suit and my parents insurance took care of the medical bills. I was out the rest of the year but they let me ride the dugout and I still had a blast. Loved my days of Little League but unfortunately I developed a fear of the ball after that accident. Someone would throw or hit a ball to me and I would step out of the way at the last minute without realizing it.

Don't think my parents ever considered suing, and I look down on those that would unless there was some obvious and extreme negligence involved.

Short of putting the kids in a padded suit and helmet, there is no way to prevent a pitcher from being hit with a line drive other than his own reflexes.

I have. Williamsport is not too far from me- they do their world series there. The valley is quite busy when that happens.

Some of my fondest memories from that time in my life are from Little League baseball.

Suing people? "Rub some dirt on it and get back in the game, kid!"

I always kind of wondered why the baseball kept looking bigger and bigger and ... and then, it hit me!

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Played like five years of little league. Singles hitter, no pop (I was a string bean, all skin, bones, feet and hands), good eye, willing to lose limbs to field a ball so they put me at 3b and let me kill line drives with my body. (Same reason I played striker/ halfback in soccer)
Had one of my best friends knock out my front teeth in a close call at first base.
Mom and Dad, they didn't sue.

I pitched for every team I played on from little league through high school. Considering how fast a line drive is going, catching one is rare, I have been hit with my fair share, every pitcher probably has.

Parents never thought of a lawsuit, father was air force, so medical was no big deal.

Remember when monkey bars were built over concrete and there were no such things as baby knee pads for babies who were crawling?

Playing sports has risks. It is not the LIttle League corps fault the kids got hurt.

We have a lot of helicopter parents in this country who are turning their kids into bigger sissies than they are.

I also played little league as soon as I could at 12. I was asked what position I wanted to play and I said 3rd base. They asked what else have I played. (CYO Detroit) Soon as catcher came out of my mouth, they told me I was their catcher...maybe. Turns out...nobody wants to play catcher.

I quit after one practice when I discovered it was all all about the coaches rather than having fun and winning.

Baby knee pads? Really? You have GOT to be kidding me.

It sounds lucky for me that there have always been so few witnesses to my reaction to bumps, knocks, bruises, scrapes, cuts, and such with my children.
