Having attended a college that had one very eclectic course requirements, such as a history major taking various music and art classes, I have been subjected to opera.. Now granted I enjoy the ring cycle by Wagner, even though I do not understand a word of German.

However, I have noticed that almost every sub/slave profile has a liking for opera listed. Okay one professor says it is because of MTV "young people are conditioned to add a visual component to music" which would be fine, IF MTV WAS SHOWING VIDEOS ALL THE TIME. MTV has gone to the "stupider the better" reality programing system. VH1 is little better.

Besides the music that the younger generation listens to, aka noise, is nothing like opera, and barely recognizable as music. Bring back the styles of the 80's.

So the question becomes, do these women really know what opera is?

I have no idea about the women you are looking at, but I'm a little offended by the suggestion that young people would only like opera if programmed to do so by MTV.

Maybe but probably not. I am thinking it is an appreciation of the talent but little else. Once the reality programming finally hits the dumber from the dumb, and we see no more frauds, (not so real after all) maybe they'll fall by the wayside.

I'm a fan of opera and that appreciation came before my ability to watch MTV.
For me, it has very little to do with visuals.

I was not suggesting it, a she did all I said was that her theory is BS, since MTV does not program music videos 24/7.

I happen to like opera because of my love for music. I would hum Mozart to Lizard when she was a baby to get her to sleep. When Les Misirable would come on PBS, I would watch it. I want to find a copy of Aida but my funds are a bit low at this time and I got a bad tooth.

I remember MTV having Headbangers Ball. I used to go to my former MIL house to watch it with her. MTV these days...BLAH!!!

I am just saying I find it strange that 18-22 year olds from east bumfuck middle of nowhere say they like opera. Nearest Opera house to Abilene is in Dallas I think. That is not to say that Abilene has never had Opera, they did, for about 3 years then it became a burlesque theater. (what do you expect, we are in the middle of cattle country)

I still think its possible. I've never been to the opera (yet) and I have been close to several opera houses.
Does not mean they were not influenced some other way.
I was introduced to it from my mother.
You don't have to see an opera to enjoy opera.

I know PBS broadcasts one on occasion, I dont know about the premium cable channals. I think what I am trying to say is that the odds are against 10 for ten people liking Opera.

I will agree with that. I have yet to personally meet someone my own age that listens to opera and classical music.
Why someone would say they like it when they don't really, I could come up with a few reasons but they'd just be theories.

Can't say I like opera per se, but I don't think I've ever heard an operatic piece and disliked it

Or perhaps those profiles you're attracted to have a higher penchant for opera?

I love opera. My father introduced it to me as a young girl.

You don't have to have seen an opera to appreciate it.

Why would you even question anyone as to their musical tastes?

The most ridiculous thing that I have seen is when people say they hate opera and when asked why, they say they never heard one.

So they just think its hip to say they don't like it.

NPR broadcasts performances every Saturday from the Met during
the season. They get NPR in Bumfuck. PBS and cable stations like
Ovation also show opera performances.

You can't know what a persons life experiences are or what they've
been exposed to by where they currently live. Just because someone
lives in a small town doesn't mean they are uneducated or don't know
anyone who is. And opera like Shakespeare and the ballet isn't something
that is difficult to appreciate if the person is exposed to it and open to
the experience. And you don't have to understand the language to be swept
away by the opera

If they are college age they could have been exposed to opera in a
music appreciation course. If you asked them they might say they
don't know a lot about opera but they like what they have been
exposed to and would like to learn more. You know expand their horizons
Gals from Bumfuck can have aspirations. I respect their willingness to
be open to newer and broader experiences over the American males who
check opera as a hard limit though they know nothing about it and are to
close minded and provincial to try and learn anything about it.

Millions of people love opera just because you don't or don't know anyone
who does is nothing more than your personal experience. It's like
ketchup on fish some people like it some don't.

My mother and I would go to 2 or 3 performances a season starting when I was 16 until I moved out of the state.

YOu clearly did not read the part where I said the odds are against 10 out of 10 people liking opera. that is what I was driving at. The popularity of the art (yes I consider it an art) is just not that high. I said I liked the Ring cycle by Wagner, and I dont understand german. I even liked the musical Camelot.

From what I have read, the odds of randomly picking ten people that all like opera is pretty high.
