Twice recently I've had messages on CM, just a short "Hiya" or similar, but when I look them up to see if they're worth replying the site reports "Profile not found," "User not found."

I wouldn't bother replying to a non-message like that anyway, and I certainly wouldn't risk it with something dodgy looking, but what is going on here? How do they message me if they don't exist on the system, and what would they get out of it if I did try to reply?

Always curious...

Their profile is hidden. Inside the email does it say no active profile? See, they can be hidden and still use the mail. Some come in, unhide the profile and you won't get the message inside the email that states that they don't have an active profile. Then they will hide it and disappear again. Some just keep it hidden and still email people.

That explains how. Still don't see why, since it's a very poor way to attract people; writing a one-word message might work if it made me look at an attractive profile, but who's going to respond to a ghost? I guess the answer is, someone desperate enough to jump at any pink name with "sub" or "slave" in it. So maybe it's a good way to screen out everyone but the total suckers...

Another reason is that a lot of the scammers only leave the profile active for 24-48 hours, then shut it down and start a new one.

They do that because it minimizes their chances of site support catching them and they constantly hit the "New Users" list.

Those aren't ghosts.

Ghosts are when you come across an old post or email from someone that you've known for years who has died.

People who just make a post or two and then disappear are just blips.

Go to the home page. Click on the box on the left where it says "edit profile". That will take you to another screen. Click on the box at the top where it says "unhide profile".

Nobody mentioned it, but, I've gotten a few profiles yanked by vociferously complaining to Alpha about them, so that might also be the reason.

The profile may have violated the TOS but sent the mail to you *before* it got yanked.

I'm a ghost and I'm here.

But, seriously, the way to get a profile yanked, at least for posting a profile picture of a model intending to mislead instead of a real person is to flag them on tineye.

Since probably half the profiles around San Jose, for example, are violating the terms of service by using Tineye pictures, you'd be spending half your life getting to know VideoAdminAlpha otherwise.

We have already explained this to your other profiles.

Not saying that this is the case here, but that only works if the profile was not created to get around a violation in another profile.

Good point.

For ages, Facebook kept suggesting I "friend" an actual friend who'd died young. It was more than a little disturbing.

It freaks me out when Facebook auto posts things from friends and family that have passed.

?

preTGirl -> RE: Ghosts on Collarme (8/15/2013 5:13:18 PM)

thank you Chi, always.
I've gotten/seen the general explanation around these lairs, but I still dont know any specifics as to where my old profile violated the TOS.
My old profile is not a ghost, I can still use it. However I do not want to use than id/name anymore.
I wonder if changing IPs, even service providers, etc, will help me, which I'm due to do anyways. Maybe afterwards I will attempt creating a new profile again, but too bad that my chosen name is already stuck/wasted on a ghost profile. In my future profile, I promise to not knowingly violate the TOS, hopefully my past mistakes dont track me down, lol! fingers crossed!
