Grass, it's whats for dinner

There is a comment about how the meat WE eat should come from animals that eat grass.

When the lawn mower wasn't working, I facetiously suggested we get a sheep. My son was all for it, the sheep eats the grass, he eats the sheep and he doesn't have to mow. The downside here is that somebody has to slaughter the animal and that somebody is not going to be me.

You forgot the copious amount of sheep shit that would be all over your lawn as well. I guess since the sheep was eating your grass, it would at least be easier to see.

It was a little unnerving to read the comment "when we eat chicken, we are pretty much eating corn".
I've tried to steer toward grass-fed beef and chicken for awhile, but the cost is dramatically higher, even in semi discount stores like Trader Joes. I don't even want to think about what I have read that really goes into farm animal feed, like "downer" animals' parts, antibiotics, god knows what else.
Now that I think about it, this might be the reason daily wine drinkers are generally healthy: the alcohol killing off the crap we eat. Thankfully cheesecake isn't negatively implicated...

You toss the sheep shit in your compost pile.

But yeah, I can see how slaughtering would be a problem.

Forgive the digression, but I can't resist sharing this.

During World War I, President and Mrs. Wilson kept a flock of sheep on the White House lawn. The animals freed up manpower for the war effort and raised money, through an auction of their wool, for the Red Cross.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

These days animals are being fed candy. Yup, candy. It's cheaper than buying corn and candy is made of fructose which basically comes from corn. Farmers have been buying bulk candy from wholesalers to feed their cattle. Farmers have come to rely on pretty much anything that will fatten the animals.

njlauren -> RE: For those with an interest in antropology (6/10/2013 10:06:22 PM)

Yeah, corn has been the standard, but with corn prices rising because of the ethanol boondoggle (don't get me started), they are looking for alternative. What is even worse is cattle are often fed a kind of feed that is made from bone meal made from slaughtered animals, and it is what leads to mad cow disease and such, they basically have turned cattle, which are herbivores, into cannibals. Between that, and the antibiotics they give them to try and keep them from dying in the factory farming, and the hormones they give them to make them grow fast, it is a wonder we all haven't seriously gotten sick (I kind of wonder, for example, if girls having their periods and hitting adolescance early isn't caused by the hormones).

I try when I can to buy free range meat or even better, organic free range, or buy chickens not fed on corn and such. It isn't easy, the organic products are a lot more expensive, but given how little we eat, it may be worth it. The whole food chain is fucked up, and now we also have Monsanto slipping GMO's out there stealthily without telling farmers, real cute.

I'm gonna try me summa them Leaves...

Now, where would I find one uh those....

MercTech -> RE: For those with an interest in antropology (6/11/2013 7:31:19 AM)

It was found in the 70s that feeding molasses along with grain caused a faster weight gain in cattle.
Enterprising farmers started with contracts to remove the floor spillage from candy companies and feeding it to cattle as a weight gain measure.

Similarly, fish farms buy the floor spillage from pet food companies to feed the fish in their pongs...

Yep, the catfish eat kitty kibble.
