http://www.politicususa.com/bad-news-republicans-irs-audit-determined.html
The lesson Republicans should have taken from Monday’s IRS hearings is “be careful what you wish for.” One of the recommendations based on the audit is “to conduct a review to assess how the IRS monitors I.R.C. sections 501(c)(4)(6) organizations to ensure that political campaign intervention does not constitute their primary activity.” On top of that, the audit revealed that there were many groups whose political intervention in campaigns should have flagged them for a review.

The Honorable J. Russell George, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, testified Monday in a House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government hearing on the IRS “scandal”. George based his testimony on an audit in which they found a few things that don’t bode well for conservatives’ “social welfare groups”, since they outspent liberals 34-1 via nonprofits on political issues. Namely, the IRS needs to investigate more of these groups that are “intervening” in political campaigns, not less.

The audit “determined that the majority of the 296 potential political cases we reviewed included indications of significant political campaign intervention.” This means that the majority reviewed were engaging in activities that warranted a review under the law.

George explained that of the 296 cases singled out for review, the majority had indications of significant political campaign intervention. 91 cases did not (31%). Of those 91, only 17 involved Tea Party, Patriots, or 9/12 groups.

The rest were “targeted” but were not Tea Party/Patriot/9/12 groups.

“In addition, while we determined that the majority of the 296 potential political cases we reviewed included indications of significant political campaign intervention, 91 cases (31 percent) did not. Of the 91 cases, 17 involved Tea Party, Patriots, or 9/12 organizations. The IRS disagreed with this finding that the cases did not include indications of significant political campaign intervention.” The IRS did not document why they thought these 91 signaled political intervention, which is one thing the auditors recommend that they fix.

It will be hilarious if the scandal mongering by House Republicans winds up with most of these groups losing their tax status and being forced to publicly reveal their, sleazy and unpopular, funders.

Hilarious. Just as if the same thing were to happen to media matters (Soros). Oriorities usa (katzenburg).. etc.
The fact is DomKen - the IRS shouldn't decide who the american people get to hear. They should apply the rules evenhandedly. They didn't. Hence scandal. And heads should roll.
The very concept of rule of law says it shouldn't matter who you are the rules apply left or right, rich or poor.

Actually the IRS has been far too lenient as the hearing showed and the fact that you know who funds Media Matters but these groups want to keep their funders secret is exactly the problem.

501(c)4 groups by the letter of the law must be exclusively engaged in social welfare. Running ads to attack a candidate clearly is not that.

Ummm....the irs didn`t "decide who the American people get to hear"......

It wasn`t their fault that so many tea-baggers used so many of the flagging words......

If the same words that were flagged were also used by liberal or A-political groups......they would have also received that awful, dreadful, additional letter from the irs.......

The issue really though is,can this "scandal"(not really) be used to attack President Obama.

If no....we won`t see much of this story.....even if the connection is circuitous and remote(he`s President = his fault)they won`t put much energy into it.

Only if they can make it about Obama-hate......will the irs thingie stick around. And you can also forget about any meaningful irs reform/

How is 'not a single group was turned down', being un-even handed to the point of scandal?

Or did you mean 'scandal' like UmbrellaGate, the Kill Whitey video, and the imaginary $200 million a day travel 'scandals'?

Actually, there was a liberal group that was turned down but that doesn't get reported.

The best indication of just how frightened of this the Obamabots are, is the steady flow of, "nothing to see here" talking point stories about the IRS scandal.

Meanwhile, the calls for a special prosecutor just keep coming.

Yupper. let's waste more time and money screaming and posturing like a bunch of howler monkeys in a territorial display instead of fixing the problems of the country.
Why do people wonder that congress has an approval rating in the mid teens.

All the more reason to get the investigation out of their hands then, wouldn't you say, Hill?

Have you heard that the IRS commissioner visited the Obama White House 150+ times between 2009 and 2012? If you watch FNC I'm sure you have despite it being a lie that was easily disproven by examining the visitor logs at the White House which are maintained by the Secret Service.

The Bush administration actually tried to get the IRS to revoke Media Matters' tax-exempt status. Funny how the GOP wasn't up in arms over that targeting, huh?

Plenty to see, as in apparent criminal behavior from those who went through the IRS process, got approved, and then were dumb enough to draw attention to their partisan activities by complaining.

You can't make this stuff up.

No, Lucy. I don't need anything to show up in my email, to keep flinging Nixon in their faces at every opportunity.

You've heard of him, right?

OK, I gotta ask. Why the special investigator? Doing a quick bit of persual it's pretty obvious to me that a few heads need to roll. But is there any evidence whatsoever that Obama had anything to do with this? I didn't see any of that anywhere I looked (that I could support via any other sources).

Why not simply can/jail folks like Lerner and Miller (I favor prison myself) and be done with it?

Wouldn't prosecuting people, so they can be put in prison, require an investigation, and a prosecutor, Jeff?

Nobody trusts Congress, and the DOJ has problems of it's own. There are lots of unanswered questions, and an independent (non-partisan even?) set of eyes with subpoena powers is what we need to get to the truth.

If you don't see anything that makes you go, "hmmm," it might be time to broaden the horizons on that perusal.
