I remember watching, in horror, the news regarding the I-35 bridge collapse in Minnesota almost 6 years ago.
I hope there were no casualties in this one.

That could have been so much worse.

Let's see now, 1955. Carry the 2. Hmmm. Works out to around 58 years.

It happens also that '55 is when the three point safety belt was patented. And it wasn't till '68 that dual brakes became standard. That should give you a clue about the safety standards in place when the bridge was built.

But, of course, we are not fools. It is just a fluke this bridge was not replaced when we rebuilt all the rest of them to modern safety and earthquake standards.

No... wait... we spent that money on war...

I just read that there are thought to be 2 cars including occupants in the water.
I hope that is just false reporting, and everybody got away safe.

According to the news tonight, they pulled 3 people from the water. The good news at this point is no fatalities.

Officials are thinking an oversize truck might have hit some overhead beams that were integral to the bridge's structure and that may have caused the bridge to collapse.

Bad news is that this is that it's going to be a bitch detour-wise to get around the collapse to head north or south

Yeah. That sometimes happens, when stuff ain't stowed right. So the explanation is really a straight out admission the design was unsafe. Strike that, IS unsafe. They can't just put it back the way it was, because we don't do things that way anymore, because it isn't safe, because a truck might hit it, just as one seems to have, predictably.

We should probably actually do what the original bridge designers expected we would and replace all the old bridges because they are old.

Exactly my thoughts too...probably a bad bridge design that just is antiquated given the vehicles that travel our highways nowadays. It might have been sufficient back then when it was built, but things are so vastly different now.

So did the driver suffer a momentary loss of control at exactly the wrong moment, or did the ignorant fuck actually try to haul an oversize load through a space it wasn't going to fit through in the first place? There are signs posted, y'know.

Thank God nobody died.

Fuck, I hope so... can you imagine getting stuck with the bill for that bridge?
