There is too much that can go wrong with that. I know embedded programming, I know sensors and I know firearms. I would not trust my family's safety to that. There are just too many single-points of failure in that design. It is very clever though. I don't mean to denigrate their work; it just isn't for me.

I could see, if I was hunting Dahl Sheep where it could be useful. I've never shot a deer at more than 50 yards. I usually just ambush them. If it wasn't for the orange no one would ever see me in the woods. Cool tech, and I like cool tech, but it isn't for me. Especially at $22k.

Please... "500 yards away. Normally it takes years of practice to hit something at that distance." 500 yards is nothing. Easy enough, even with open sights. Ask any Marine recruit after Weapons Bttn.

Basically, it's just a fancy laser/scope/ballistics computer strapped onto a tactical bolt-action. Meh. Don Giovani is right, 500 yards isn't much, even with open sights. I can see it as more of a military/police product rather than a consumer product. My longest shot is 1375 yards (paced with a wheel), with a Remington 700 BDL, .22-250, 26" Douglas Medium Heavy, 75 grains Nosler, forgot the powder/amount, 6X20 Zeiss. I miss chuck hunting...

FR~ 500 yards really is nothing at all. I used to pick off small birds over 400 yards away with just a Z50 air rifle and hunters (steel) pellets and an open sight. A decent rifle should be chicken feed at 500 yards. The report also said "Schauble says there's nothing else like it, even in the military". Has he never seen the laser-guided stuff? Or the Sonobouy underwater target-aquisition weapons that can pick out a tin can in 500 miles of open sea and hit it with 99.9% accuracy?? You just "acquire" the target and pull the trigger - the computer systems do the rest. This was stuff I worked on over 20 years ago and it's been further developed since I left the military. This Schauble guy must have been living under a rock for the last 20-30 years or so. And with that price tag, I can think of better things to spend my money on!!

A buddy of mine begged me for years to sell it to him, and when I moved back East, I gave in. You need a 'chuckinator? Go to a gun shop or sporting goods store and offer to let hunters onto your property. You'll get takers for sure. The easiest way is to go to a clerk or the owner and describe your problem. Another way is to contact a local fish and game club, too. Or, consider the DIY route. A good bolt-action in a center-fire .22 isn't all that expensive, and many come as a combo with glass. Get a good fixed bipod, range-finder, and some trigger time and you too can be woodchuck-free.

We're probably going the trap route because the damned things are living right next to the house. The people who hunt my land are after deer and turkey. Although I do keep suggesting they get a bear permit.

A lead pellet will barely dent a trash can lid at 10 yards. A pointed steel pellet will go right through a trash can at 200 yards and is far easier to aim correctly than anything made of lead - it doesn't drift hardly at all. A good aim will get you hitting a 1cm (penny-sized) target every time over 400 yards with a steel pellet. Try that with a lead pellet and you're lucky if it even reaches that distance.

Apart from that being a huge range for an air rifle... I think you have your distances mixed up... I have done target shooting for quite a while... I agree that good iron sight shooters can do some long distances, I've personally shot with a girl who could do smaller groupings than me over 600m but that was .308... I find it extremely difficult to believe an air rifle could even make it to those distances... And how could you sight your target when your shooting at 20/30 degree up? Even a .308's trajectory will arch a fair bit to get that far.
