SpanishMatMaster -> Need SF novel / tale name, please help (5/4/2013 10:15:32 PM)

Thanks for Delilya for inspiring this thread.

Ok. It is a tale or a single novel, written before 1985 (but could be 1960, no idea).

The protagonist lives in a technological future controlled by a kind of "counsil". Each member of the counsil has an associated ministry, color and coin. The coins of different values have the face of the different ministers. One member is the daughter of the leader of the counsil. Topical situation - the hero is in love (somehow) with her, he being a rebel, criminal, lawless... something similar. In some moments he gets a coin to look at her face.

I have searched this novel / tale for years, I mistook it with Nostrilia, then with Chton... nobody in my surroundings remembers it. Maybe I actually dreamed the whole stuff. But does this ring some bell anywhere...?

Sorry, not ringing any bells with me.

Sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't place it. Roger Zelazny?

Hillwilliam -> RE: Need SF novel / tale name, please help (5/7/2013 9:07:09 AM)

Was it a post apocalyptic series with a bunch of genetic engineering going on?

SpanishMatMaster -> RE: Need SF novel / tale name, please help (5/7/2013 10:09:42 AM)

Nope.

There was... a kind of huge city of metal, though. Or the whole world. And the rebel was sometimes outside. I think. In the "outdoors" which nobody usually used. At some moment there, he took some time to reflect, and then he took that coin out of his purse to look are his beloved.

Thank you everybody for trying, though. Thanks.

Sounds pretty early '70s, whatever it is.
Charles Harness?
Jack Vance?
Vincent King?
Samuel Delaney?
Charles Platt?

FR

Well, damn. The thread title drew me in, because I took SF to mean San Francisco, and I was all set to wax enthusiastic about Armistead Maupin.

I usually pride myself on my Google prowess, but I'm striking out on this one. I did find some references to a Christopher Rowe story called "The Voluntary State" (review at http://rhapsodistreviews.wordpress.com/2012/08/14/rewired-12/ ). That may be worth checking out. And a note to the reviewer might aid your quest.

I also found a sci-fi website called Tor.com. You may have better luck posting your query on their message boards ( http://www.tor.com/community ).

Good luck! I know the frustration of trying to find an elusive book.
