The airline has another concern, what if you have a dozen plus passengers who won't board and want a refund? I can see a number of nervous people saying 'fuck this!' In that case, they are not going to take all of that lost revenue.

In the end, you said it best with REASONABLE accomodation. In the 100's of thousands of miles I have flown I have never seen someone like Christopher Reeves on a plane. They just can't accomodate that kind of disability safely. While this guy had a psychological disability, he would be creating psychological terror on the plane. A baby is annoying, a guy shouting fake threats is dangerous.

I'm disabled. When I flew recently, I called the airline and let them know about my disability, and what assistance I needed.

then why say he should have called ahead and all if the people he would be calling dont have a clue? [8|]

There's this little thing called "research", though I appreciate that many in this forum appear to find that even less attractive than a warthog with anal herpes.

It is not the airline's responsibility to research the needs of a disabled passenger. It is, however, the disabled person's responsibility to fully explain their disability. It is also the disabled person's responsibility to shield themselves from triggers, such as watching coverage that he knew would cause his mind to fixate on the situation.

there is just some shit you have to put up with and thats life.

yes, that was my point.. this person repeating any word (bomb, bananas, swear words) is in the same league as a baby crying.. people dont get kicked off cuz of their baby crying so why should he be treated any differently?

If you don't understand the difference between a baby crying and someone repeatedly loudly saying "bomb" over and over on an airplane, then really nothing said here is going to help you understand.

Exactly. Airlines do what they can (usually. British Airways, unsurprisingly sucked). For some reason, they seem to think that pre-boarding someone disabled, and then putting them in an aisle seat makes sense. It wasn't until I told them it would be much easier for me to sit by the window that the light dawned with them realizing that it prevented me from having to get up to let people into and out of the two inner seats (since as disabled, I also exit last). Then I realized that sitting in that front aisle was even better, and I was accommodated.

and yet you said if he instead said the word "daisies" repeatedly that you "wouldn't like to hear him repeating that every 5 minutes either".. [8|] again, I would take him over the constantly screaming baby sitting next to me..

LafayetteLady -> RE: man with tourettes not allowed to fly (4/30/2013 11:11:38 AM)

I said I wouldn't want to hear it. However, if there were the case, I WOULD defend his right to have gotten on the plane and be a royal pain in the ass.

I dont see the difference between him saying bomb, daisies, or any other word.. since i know he cant control his medical condition (& I know he went thru TSA like i did, took his shoes off like I did, went thru metal detectors like I did, and is no security threat like me).. so to me no matter what word it is, the word is meaningless.. it is illogical to me to get upset about it..

Yes, people with babies/toddlers who will not behave get removed from flights.

People get removed from flights from all sorts of reasons. Just because they haven't held a press conference about it, doesn't mean that it isn't going on.

Just because something is illogical to you doesn't mean that it doesn't make actual sense.

Good point. Though they're both a pain in the arse, somebody shouting 'BOMB' repeatedly might have more novelty value at first and I might even have to stop myself from laughing. Screaming kids, though - I never get the chuckles from that, I've found.

tazzygirl -> RE: man with tourettes not allowed to fly (4/30/2013 7:12:24 PM)

Flight time would have been 3 1/2 hours.

As far as kids being kicked off planes....

Considering you also thought there were private areas on planes for passengers, I'm not terribly surprised you find someone shouting "bomb" on an airplane to be novel and funny.

OsideGirl -> RE: man with tourettes not allowed to fly (4/30/2013 7:19:10 PM)

Hell, people get removed for clothing, being drunk, having an argument, smelling bad, making inappropriate comments to the flight attendant, etc.

LafayetteLady -> RE: man with tourettes not allowed to fly (4/30/2013 7:29:19 PM)

What I find amusing about those articles are the parents believing that people should have to tolerate their kids behavior for the duration of the flight. Much like the people who think it is ok for their children to run around a restaurant.

I'm a mother and a grandmother, and if my granddaughter starts running around where she shouldn't, it isn't permitted.

Yep....and yet that is what we are talking about when it comes down to it....the claim that a large group of people should have to endure one person's behavior.

Moonhead -> RE: man with tourettes not allowed to fly (5/1/2013 8:22:47 AM)

At least (unlike people who are incapable of raising kids' ill mannered hobgoblins) the guy with tourette's can't control his behaviour and wouldn't cool it if somebody belted him one.

A lot of people haven't been exposed to Tourettes, so they don't understand that behavior. (Just like Autism or Aspergers) It doesn't help that even some of the people that have heard of Tourettes have only heard of it from comedy skits or videos on You Tube that show it as something funny.

Moonhead -> RE: man with tourettes not allowed to fly (5/1/2013 8:50:07 AM)

Very true. That dubious "John's Not Mad" video is probably on youtube...

No he can't. However, that doesn't mean he gets a "pass" on things because of it. Some things, yes, but not all. It is simply the way it is.

While an extreme example, if someone couldn't control their bowels, would you feel it was ok to let them swim in the community pool because the problem was out of their control?

Moonhead -> RE: man with tourettes not allowed to fly (5/1/2013 9:52:37 AM)

Not actually what I suggested: I was trying to point out that these comparisons posters are making to the ill mannered shrieking adverts for abortion their fuckwitted parents have dragged onto a plane are spurious and misleading.
