I am not trying to take away from what has happen in Boston but has anyone heard what the outcome has been for the explosion in TX? Do they know yet what has caused it? They had a moment in silents today for all the people who died due to that exlosion in Boston, has anyone heard if they are doing the same for those in TX? I have not seen anything on the new so was hopeing maybe some here has seen or heard something

I had heard 2 things last week and have not heard anything to contradict:

1) The plant was cited in the 80s for safety violations and had not been inspected since.
2) The explosion was caused from the anhydrous ammonia in one of the tanks (which was being stored under pressure).
The ammonia was not itself flammable but the heat from the fire caused it to expand and then the expansion caused it to explode.

I am not attached to this information being right; it is just what I heard when NPR covered the story.

I was looking for info on those that lost their lives. I have seen post for the cop that was killed by the bombers but nothing on the firefighters that went to help and got caught up in the second explostion at the plant. I think they should have just as much recognition, as those who where heros in Boston.

Anhydrous ammonia burns. Ammonium nitrate will detonate. The plant seems to have had several hundred tons of ammonium nitrate on hand, capable of producing a blast similar to a very small nuke.

Ammonium nitrate has been one of the most dangerous chemicals to handle in very large quantities (and well known as such) for a long time (see Texas City Disaster).

Reports are that this plant was in violation of a law that requires facilities storing as much volatile chemicals as they did to report that to the feds and be monitored for safety and security.

It is also being reported this plant had basically no safety equipment of any kind, sprinklers, fire walls etc.

Right now there is not much news coming out of West . The how's and whys are still being out together . All I know is there was a fire or accident (still not sure what) and when first responders got there a explosion took most of them out . Homes with in the first 1/4 mile took most of the damage . The plant itself is now just a crater . It could have been worse had this happen on a weekend or when the kids where not in school .

Prefaced by "drunk and stupid". I feel bad for the families of the dead, and anger at what is going to turn into a years-long legal fight that will turn into a long-drawn finger pointing game as the government, lawyers, and the company all play the CYOA game. The simple fact of the matter is, it was probably an industrial accident precipitated by the company cutting corners for either survival or to further line the pockets of the owners. It's happened before, and will happen again.

The sad thing is, those kinds of operations are inherently dangerous (as are flour and sugar mills) simply due to the way the materials are processed. There is no way to make the system absolutely safe, and the real crime was in allowing the town to develop so close to the plant. It was in Texas, for pity's sake, they should have had ample room to build a town near enough to the plant for the workers, but far enough away for safety.
