I vote sexist not cuz I absolutely think it is but because I know a good Dem would always say a GOPer saying it is. Therefore, I vote for consistent application of the PC rules

It is stock way of pointing out that she is successful in an arena traditionally reserved for white males... without reciting the 'First woman, First Indian' etc. litany.

If he had commented on her tits, or grabbed her ass, it would have been sexist.

And the flap is of course, purely manufactured offense. If he hadn't noted her gender at all, some quarters would be calling him gay.

As of right now, my vote was the tie-breaker. 5 - 4 in favor of it not being sexist. IMO, it was a compliment.
    quote:

"You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you'd want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake," Obama said, adding: "She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country."

The quick remark launched a thousand conversations about successful women and their looks. For some, Obama's observation brought to mind countless instances of women being judged for their appearance rather than their aptitude. But others saw something different – a harmless compliment – and wondered when it became sexist to tell a woman she's beautiful.

So, he said she is brilliant, dedicated, tough and the best-looking AG. The "best" in any subjective category doesn't necessarily mean anything without an understanding of the competition. Based on her pic in the story, I can see it being true. When I first read this story (prior to this thread), I rolled my eyes at the inanity that is the media outrage.

Interesting question here. Can the truth be sexist?

I'm not talking "truth" in the form of "all women are bad drivers" or anything like that...that's clearly sexist, because it's wrong.

But let's face it, people always want to be attractive...men and women. Complimenting somebody on their looks, especially when there's a basis for doing so...can that ever be sexist? Obviously if there's some sort of backhanded compliment, it could be. Something like "Don't bother your pretty head with how to do algebra."

ETA

Here's a list of all the current state AGs: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Harris is very good-looking, compared to most of her "competition."

I voted no because I am sick of every compliment being twisted and men (because it doesn't go both ways) being afraid to comment on a woman's nice dress for fear of being pummeled. get a grip people.

DS and muhly, I agree. She's a good looking woman, and I don't think the Prez was being sexist; they've been friends for years, and I think he was saying it with good intentions.

Cordelia, good post, pretty lady.

Despite the all-pervasive presence of gender-based bias, you must look at an instance individually and in context, to make what can only be a judgment call, as to whether what a person says or does is biased.

Fortunately for the President, this remark was preceded by other similar, un-newsworthy remarks made in public, at political events, toward male politicians. It was the light-hearted touch of humor at the end of his serious testament to this public official's admirable qualifications for her office. And the remark was couched in the public knowledge that the two are long-time friends, so that the informality of such a joke is friendly and permissible.

I don't feel it was sexist, and I don't believe that Attorney General Harris thought it was sexist, either. However, once the issue has been raised, the cries of sexism put her in an awkward position. How can she too casually dismiss accusations of sexism, in this case, without seeming to take this very real issue for women too lightly? Therefore, when reports have remarked that she has not publicly accepted the apology, I feel sure that this last consideration is all that prevented her from summarily dismissing the suggestion that his remark was sexist.

On Meet the Press, someone characterized these remarks of the President's, such as "this good-lookin' guy over here," referring to another politician, as awkward. Why? How is it not charming for a powerful public figure to inject a little gentle humor, breaking up the formality and putting someone at ease? It's not like he's being lascivious about it. I think it's socially gracious.

Agreed with it being "socially gracious", but I do think the AG should have immediately squashed any talk of the comment being sexist. Be direct. Not sexist? Everyone put on your big boy and girl britches, and move on. Sexist? Call'em out on it. The human race needs to wake up.
