Lego to Cease Production of the Popular "Jabba's Palace" Toy Set

[image]http://cbshartford.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/lego.jpg[/image]

Muslim groups in Austria claimed "Jabba’s Palace" was anti-Muslim as it showed popular "Star Wars" character Jabba the Hut in a mosque-like lair with a hookah, guns and an imprisoned Chewbacca. "This sort of thing does not belong in a child’s bedroom," Melissa Gunes, spokeswoman for Austria’s Turkish Cultural Association, told The Independent. "The game is pedagogical dynamite. It depicts Muslims as terrorists." RT News reports that Muslim critics felt "Jabba’s Palace" looked like the Hagia Sophia and the Jami al-Kabir mosques.

Lego claims that the criticism has nothing to do with its decision, saying that the product was planned from the beginning to be in their assortment of Star Wars products only until the end of 2013. Nevertheless, they have cancelled their production run after only three months and issued a statement expressing their regrets.

Oh brother! Yep, that's the first thing I would have thought of while checking out the set!!

Hillwilliam -> RE: Now it's Jabba the Hut (4/2/2013 9:06:36 AM)

When I first saw it was being discontinued, I figured it was because it was 'indoctrinating' our children that mosques were OK to play with and it was promoting acceptance.

breagha -> RE: Now it's Jabba the Hut (4/2/2013 9:11:49 AM)

Lego collectors better snatch that one up quickly!! it will be worth something one day i'm sure.

why does Jabba the Hutt have to be Muslim? i would have never thought of him as Muslim. He's a gangster from Tatooine!

Nosathro -> RE: Now it's Jabba the Hut (4/2/2013 9:24:40 AM)

Oh this is nothing new, as a collector many items for some reason or another are discontinued. I remember the Duras Sisters action figures were discontinued because people were complaining that they both showed too much of their boobs. An American model company Aurora known for making models of Universal Monster went out of business do to people complaining that the monster models were a bad influence of kids. Then there are these Christian groups like the Westboro Church and what they all think about comic books.

Ironic that it is the Austrian Turks who object, considering it was outside Vienna where the Turks' dream of an Islamic Empire in Europe was dashed. By the armies of the Kingdom of Poland no less. More irony considering the later collusion of the Austrians in the captivity of Poland. History. What goes around comes around.

Is this some kind of new complaint? I don't recall any Muslims complaining about Jabba the Hutt or the depiction of his palace before, and the movie has been around for 30 years now. Or is it just this Lego thing they're complaining about?

FrostedFlake -> RE: Now it's Jabba the Hut (4/2/2013 10:59:56 AM)

Where were these complaints in 1977?

35 years later there is suddenly a message in the movie that wasn't there before?

If Jabba is a Muslim, what religion does the Wookie represent? And all those little white guys with high-powered lasers doing everything the big black guy says? (sorry, I know I should NEVER say, "big black guy". It scares little white guys) What is the message there? And all those weird looking aliens hiding from the light in that space ranger bar MUST represent Illegal aliens! Right? C'mon, help me out here. The sand people, those have GOT to be Arabs, doing what Arabs have always done. Right? Riding big, slow harybeasts, stealing children, shooting at passing landspeeders inexplicably. And, of course, EVERYONE knows better than to actually SAY what everyone KNOWS the Jawas represent, because that would be antisemitic.

See? It's easy! Why don't you try it too?

Edit : Extra punctuation..

I don't see anything particularly Islamic about a fat slug smoking a hookah, either. Of the three I knew in college, two were Jewish and one was Catholic.

I've always wondered why no one ever set up a coffee stand called "Java, the Hut".
