FatDomDaddy -> Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 12:42:54 PM)

This is one bizarre story... what an idiotic over reaction to an off the cuff quip by a nerd.

Are we really going to crumble as a society because people's "feelings" get hurt?

BTW...This Anonymous group is an interesting bunch. I wonder if they were protection one of their own on this?

A Dongle Joke That Spiraled Way Out Of Control

Moonhead -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 12:50:00 PM)

WTF does this have to do with political correctness?

Did you read the article, moon?
A couple of guys at a geek conference were telling off color jokes using bad puns. Some chick got all butthurt even though they weren't referring to or speaking to her and decided they needed to be fired.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 12:56:39 PM)

There ya go... That about sums it up.

Moonhead -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 12:59:44 PM)

I read the article.
That's why I'm asking what political correctness has to do with this: if the butthurt chick had been doing off colour jokes in front of a mixed audience, she'd have got her collar felt as well.

Real0ne -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 1:04:30 PM)

well cant deny the holocaust as they want people to believe it in germany either, because the government gets all butt hurt, coming to a theater near you soon!

same thing

jlf1961 -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 1:06:24 PM)

It deals with political correctness in the following manner.

The "forking the guy's repo" had nothing to do with sex, women or even human anatomy.

Statements that can be misinterpreted have gotten men fired for some years now.

Men never seem to take things women say in such a way that would get them fired, but lately, it seems that women react to almost anything.

Because we're becoming "The United States of the Offended".

People actively look for reasons to be offended.

~Fast Reply~

No more dongle jokes?

Well THAT sucks.

Does this also mean that we can no longer listen to or sing Chuck Berry's, "My ding-a-ling," either?

Really, perhaps I should be fired from my job because I know what goes through my head everytime someone uses the term, "doongle." And frankly, I have made and heard more than one bad pun about them. I always felt it was just one of those "silly" things.

njlauren -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 1:17:46 PM)

Yeah, it is, it is also pathetic that a young woman in this society suddenly becomes a blushing victorian woman about ready to faint from witnessing or hearing about some sort of lewd thing *gag*.

I am no Fox News, Rush Limbaugh type, who claim that sexual harassment is a myth, that men are being beaten down, etc, but in this case they are right.

Here is the deal, they were are a conference of python programmers (ya can tell how geeky that is), and yeah, they were having fun with terms like 'dongles' and other things, making sophomoric jokes, like 'doing something to his dongle' or whatever. It is pretty lame humor, but apparently this woman (who is supposed to be a 'software evangelist, whatever that is), decided she didn't like the jokes, and instead of doing what a rational person would do, she turned around, took their picture, and tweeted it to her followers (where it blossomed out from there, of course), basically calling them harassers and pigs for telling 'sexual jokes' or something (yahoo had it as a front page news article on their site).

So it gets even worse/better. One of the guys ended up being fired from his company when they saw the tweet, because they were afraid of a backlash, so over this, a guy with 3 kids lost his job.

Well, the proverbial shit hit the fan, and there was a lot of outrage over this in the tech community, especially in california where this took place. Apparently, the outrage was so large that the twit that did this was fired, because her company was getting all kinds of firms that might be their client, telling them basically to fuck off and die for employing someone so stupid.

The point here is that common sense seemed to be totally oblivious to this twit, who obviously is one of the people who can't go a second without throwing something on a social networking site. Someone with an ounce of common sense would have turned around, and told the guys to put a sock in it, and it would have ended there, but she couldn't resist 'getting them' and such, and karma came back on her.

And despite what I am sure the Gloria Steinhams of the world would claim, this has a lot more to it....

1)This was not in the workplace. Lawyers could argue that if the programmers were at the event, paid for by their employers, that it is an extension of the company, but the key factor is, the woman in question did not work for their firm(s)...(the two guys worked for different companies). This could not be considered workplace sexual harassment, as some idiot commenters on another site said, so the company is on think grounds for firing the guy, hopefully he will find a high profile attorney and bankrupt them, as well as the girl in question.

2)She violated their civil rights, something I am sure a lot of the Facebook/social networking world will find shocking. It is illegal under california law (sadly not federal) to take someone's picture and post it without their consent, it specifically was meant for cases like this, this was not on the street, it was a private facility. She now is subject to both criminal and civil penalties for what she did.

For committing that act alone, her company is justified in firing her, and unlike some of the 'women's rights' lawyers I saw interviewed on this, they can't argue she is being punished for protecting herself, she violated the law.

What is really sad about this is it gives a lot of fuel to the real enemy, the real discrimination that is out there and ignored, and a story like this gives credibility to the Fox News and Rush Limbaugh bloat heads that sexual harassment and discrimination is a myth. I have seen the real things, I have seen investment banker types and traders touching women in inappropriate ways, I have heard them say stuff to them that was demeaning and foul *(rush limbaugh might think some young jackwad grabbing his crouch and saying to a passing admin "Hey, baby want some of this", but then again, the man has been married, what, 4 times?), I have seen floor traders put a used condom in a piece of equipment and ask for a female tech to 'fix it' deliberately, and her bosses saying "oh, you know, they are just having fun, they are letting off steam").....so it is quite real.

But this? Fucking grow up, you twit, this isn't 19th century England, and in that place and time she had the power to get them to stop....among other things, knowing the nerd community only too well, they were just thinking they were being clever, and if she had said boo to them they would have turned white and stopped.

Moonhead -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 1:17:55 PM)

Which has fuck all to with political correctness, sadly. I've noticed a lot of Americans are so incredibly thin skinned that they can find offense anywhere. This sort of nonsense was already going on back in the '50s when "political correctness" meant blacklisting communists...

Moon, that's where political correctness came from.
People are now afraid to use 'certain terms' because someone might get offended.
The number of 'certain terms' gets larger every day.
At the rate we're going, the be on the lookout posters in the post office will all be smiley faces because it won't be 'politically correct' to 'offend' some scum by posting his face.

A Dongle Joke That Spiraled Way Out Of Control

I have found that those who snivle the loudest about political correctness are the first ones to use it.

thompsonx -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 2:02:49 PM)

fr
This from the cite, it is from the snitches tweet:

Women in technology need consistant [sic] messaging from birth through retirement they are welcome, competent and valued in the industry,” she explained in a blog post.
There is plenty wrong with the sentence gramatically but ethically...the fact that she excludes men from "consistant messaging..." is most instructive.
I found the response attributed to anonymous to be appropriate.

Adria Richards engaged in malicious conduct to destroy the another individual’s professional career due to what she perceived as an affront to her own extremist views from a comment that was not directed at her, not meant for her to hear, and certainly not for her to provide unwarranted input on. As such, she should have her professional career destroyed just like her victim in order for justice to be rendered and balance restored to the universe. The hivemind’s judgement is final and there is no appeal. No forgiveness, no forgetting remember?

governments start all this shit.
banning talk that does not conform with the governments version of the holocaust? Burning the american flag in any way less than a ritual prayer. Hell we can go on and on listing this crap "government" starts.

After doing some reading and sifting through the material, this is, to me, the best summarization. (For some reason collarchat is refusing to allow me to put in links, so you will have to copy/paste)

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 3:34:03 PM)

That link is in the OP too.

Amanda Blum's take was an interesting perspective, though her continuing instance of the misogyny plaguing the "geek" world was a tad annoying.

The bottom line is that Adria Richards is a bully with an ax to grind that much is clear and she got a taste of her own medicine. That said, sadly it appears she has learned nothing and from what I can see on her twitter, she's posturing for her crusade that she is the victim in all of this. No doubt the lawyers are circling!

I am pretty sure what most people are taking out of this is; Try not to piss off Anonymous.

We find it most instructive that you find the truth to be a "tad annoying".
The article you posted is quite clear that misogyny does plage the geek community.

absolutchocolat -> RE: Has Political Correctness Really Come Down to This??? (3/23/2013 3:58:55 PM)

Misogyny does plague that industry but that wasn't it. That was a woman who is passive-aggressive with an ax to grind. Seriously, be a big girl and approach the guys. Tell them what your gripe is and squash it. People really need to shut off their computers if that is how they conduct themselves on social media. It's like when the lovely idiots from the other side come and complain about fakes and scammers. [8|]

I thought I was pretty clear in my opinion of the morron in question. I think she got pretty much what she deserved.
