Suddenly, the volume on any video or movie I pull up says it's on mute, when I never put it there, and I cannot get it to unmute. I just did a system restore which didn't change it.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Which way did you try unmuting: via your computer's video player, or via the volume control on your computer itself (or external speakers if you have those)?

The volume on my computer control shows it's on and it's normal.

The sound/mute thing on any video w/audio or any movie is locked in the mute position, and won't unlock.

Have you tried closing the program and restarting it, to see if that makes a difference?

If you try that and it makes no difference, you may want to open your task manager and make sure that the program is truly closed fully and not still open in the background somehow.

If it is fully closed with nothing running in the background, then my suggestion would be to restart your computer and see if that helps.

Best and most clever idea yet.

I had done all that stuff before, w/o success. About 5 minutes ago, of its own volition, it started working right again. Go figure. Thanks for all your suggestions, tho'.

I would recommend (k-light mega codec pack) ... (mega not the full or basic) however when you download it & install it ... open the media player classic & press O it will open option menu then navigate to audio switcher check normalize & boost to 3.0DB & you are done (apply & ok) ... play everything on that player which will open any kind of video/audio format

Could well be. I spent most of yesterday trying to get my webcam to work. Having exhausted all the software solutions I could find or think of, I finally worked it out that a wire was loose inside the netbook. Opened it up, pushed a plug in more firmly . . . bingo. But, still, if there was a faulty connection between speaker and audio, I wouldn't expect the speaker to be shown as 'muted'. I'd expect it to be showing as faulty or not existing at all.

If it was a loose wire then the PC wouldn't think it had sound hardware at all and the symptoms would be totally different. This was some sort of software problem although without knowing what video player she was using and what settings she messed around with it'd be impossible to diagnose.

PS: As a rule I avoid codec packs. VLC media player plays every damned file format ever known without installing a raft of dodgy codecs on your PC. Things like K-lite were cool before VLC. Now it's something I avoid.

totally agreed but I hate the way VLC is designed in .. & the orange color makes me wanna kill someone ...

I go for VLC, too. I've never found anything it couldn't play, unless the file was broken (or scumware) in the first place.

Could be a hardware problem.
Or, it could be your audio codecs are glitches.
Try reloading your audio driver software.
