Does anyone besides me remember when MTV and VH1 actually showed music videos for the entire programing schedule?

When the news was considered unbiased?

You know during the days of the Evil Empire, and I dont mean starbucks.

Oh yeah, we only had one phone company to blame? When ATT had a monopoly on phone service?

Before Alex Jones, Glen Beck and Rachel Maddow?

Yep.

It's an over 40 thing, I think.

Well, maybe not the unbiased media.

Well, the news was a little more even sided... better than it is now.

Video killed the radio star.

Then, reality tv killed the videos.

I remember all that.  I also remember that Saturday morning was the highlight of the week.  I'd get up really early and watch the test pattern until the cartoons would start.  All Saturday morning there was nothing but kid shows on TV.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

That never happened. It's an illusion old people foster to lambaste the young.

Go read editorials in Hearst papers about the Maine, and you'll see that our media is, if anything, less biased than it was 100 years ago.

But yes, AT and T sucked majestically. Remember when you had to pay an 80% surcharge for fucking "call waiting" (or a "party line")? I love Lily Tomlin's bit about that on SNL.

Can't have McCarthyism and effective media too. The fourth estate is just too useful a tool to ever grow cold in a drawer.

Was it Nixon said, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost America."

Why would a President say something like that?

I agree on bias in the news. The press has been biased since 1690 and the first English-American news sheet debut—Boston's Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick.

I agree about the news bias. News outlets have always had a bias towards the left or the right. Now about MTV. Hell yes I remember back in the day. I remember as a kid sitting up late at night and watching Headbangers Ball on the illegal cable tv my friends dad spliced into his garage! Now I cannot even remember the last time I bothered to turn on MTV because of all the crappy shows on it but it has certainly been years at least.

Wrong. I'm under 40 and I remember those days. I was in elementary school when MTV and VH1 played music. I wasn't allowed to watch those stations

Let's test that. No Googling. What's a baby bell?

If your answer is, "cheese," then no, you aren't old enough.

Vaguely.

quote:

When the news was considered unbiased?

The news was always biased, although back then, we had far fewer choices for news - basically the broadcast networks and local daily newspapers - no internet and very little immediate access to alternative news sources.

Nowadays, there are so many more options available that the news doesn't really have to be "unbiased" anymore (not that it ever was). In fact, now that we have all these different options to get news from a wider variety of diverse sources, we can truly see just how biased the news is and always has been.

Perhaps the only reason news seemed more unbiased back then is because we had very few alternative sources to compare it to. Nowadays, we can check the veracity of any news story in a matter of minutes - something we couldn't do back then. Now that I can look back at some of the news stories I remember, knowing what I know now, I can recognize that there was plenty of bias and selective reporting. I didn't realize it at the time because I didn't know any better.

Yep, I remember it very well. I even had the opportunity to visit the Evil Empire before it collapsed.

quote:

Oh yeah, we only had one phone company to blame? When ATT had a monopoly on phone service?

That's another dim memory. A bit further back, I remember dial phones and having to go through the operator to make a long-distance call. At least we didn't have a party line, although there were still those who did.

quote:

Before Alex Jones, Glen Beck and Rachel Maddow?

We had Nixon, Reagan, and Goldwater. There seemed to be more Birchers back then, or at least, they seemed more readily accepted in some mainstream circles. Those regarded as "conspiracy theorists" today might have found greater acceptance back then, and it wasn't until the mid-to-late 1990s (post-Waco and OKC) that they started to be dismissed "anti-government nuts." But back in the late 70s/early 80s, almost everyone I knew seemed to believed in conspiracies to some degree - JFK, Vietnam, Watergate, fake Moon landings, UFOs, Trilateral Commission, Bilderbergers, the CIA, NSA, etc. By the 1990s, there was a growing and decidedly zealous reaction against that kind of talk, and this trend has continued to the present day. So, now, they seem more relegated to the fringe than they used to be.

speaking of phone companies, does anyone remember MCI? =p I guess they're still around, but you don't hear about them anymore.

I remember when MTV played music videos - I used to sneak and watch it because I wasn't allowed. =p That's how I found one of my favorite bands of all time - Bush! (English version)

I also remember Saturday morning cartoons.

Pretty sure the news has always been considered biased, though.

I know the bloke who played the piano on that track. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8r-tXRLazs )He's a lazy slob who does nothing except sit in the local pub quaffing ale all evening. Still, he doesn't need to do anything else - the lad's minted, lucky sod.

I remember when MTV came along and ruined rock music forever.

When the news was considered unbiased?

I cannot ever remember a time when that was the case.

Oh yeah, we only had one phone company to blame? When ATT had a monopoly on phone service?

I remember the great service at low prices I got from Ma Bell. So much for competition driving down the cost of things.
Had it not been for Judge Greene we would all have fiber to our homes by now.

I remember MCI. Microwave Communications Incorporated, although we could have called it "Most Calls Incomplete." After the breakup of AT&T, we got to choose our long distance carrier, with AT&T, MCI, and Sprint emerging as the big three. They were all advertising quite a bit, even to the point of becoming as strident and irritating as most political ads are.

Of course, back in those days, a long-distance call was a much bigger deal.

I watched Video Killed the Radio star when MTV first aired.   I remember when VH1 was new and Pop Up Video was my favorite!!!!!

I don't know that this was ever completely true, but it is certainl more biased now than it ever has been.   I remember when it was biased, but reputable as opposed to biased and half truths.

Which Evil empire?   Germany?  Soviets?  Warsaw Pact?  Al Qada?

It's very handy to have an evil enemy to unify people against.

ATT?????   The monopoly I remember was American Bell.
