Yep.

It's an over 40 thing, I think.

Well, maybe not the unbiased media.

Wrong. I'm under 40 and I remember those days. I was in elementary school when MTV and VH1 played music. I wasn't allowed to watch those stations [8D]

What she said...at least in regards to MTV (don't know the other one).

Level -> RE: Do you remember..... (3/8/2013 3:40:48 PM)

Hell, I remember The Midnight Special...

And Friday Night Videos, on the USA Network.

Does anyone besides me remember when MTV and VH1 actually showed music videos for the entire programing schedule?

When the news was considered unbiased?

You know during the days of the Evil Empire, and I dont mean starbucks.

Oh yeah, we only had one phone company to blame? When ATT had a monopoly on phone service?

Before Alex Jones, Glen Beck and Rachel Maddow?

Jeeebus...you are fucking old (like me)....I remember a lot of shit....most of which few can follow.

Let's test that. No Googling. What's a baby bell?

If your answer is, "cheese," then no, you aren't old enough.

I may not be OLD enough, but I do remember when VH1 and MTV played music. All the time all day. I don't want to be that age anyways. I'm having just enough fun at my current age. Just because you made an assumptive statement and were proved wrong, well I guess that's just your problem.

playfulotter -> RE: Do you remember..... (3/8/2013 5:50:57 PM)

Well...There are 4-6 MTV stations and some of those play videos all the time or a lot of the time....You just have to go over station 100 to find them I guess...for me I am not into videos like I was back then so I don't miss it....every so often I see a neat video I like online on YouTube though.

ATT?????   The monopoly I remember was American Bell.

I think it went through a series of names. First it was the Bell Telephone Company, then American Bell, and then it became American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T). They still controlled the Bell System (Ma Bell) and Western Electric, which made their equipment ("The heart of the Bell System").

I remember when AT&T used to sponsor the "America the Beautiful" circle-vision show at Disneyland. They also had some exhibits and displays which showed how the phone system worked. I thought that was rather fascinating as a kid. All those lines, switches, area codes, and exchanges - a whole system set up just so I and my friends could call people and ask them if their refrigerator is running. [;)]

Video killed the radio star.

Then, reality tv killed the videos.

I blame the real world!!

Of coarse when I tell the grands I watched the dawn of .MTV, had computers programmed with punch cards, played real records as a kid & show them my casette recorder...all get is a look like I said I rode dinosaurs!!

DaddySatyr -> RE: Do you remember..... (3/9/2013 12:16:21 PM)

It wasn't "The Real World". It was "Cribs" and "Remote Control"

Youngsters ... Sheesh!

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Yes I remember when MTV showed only video, who can forget Julie Brown. I also remember when gas was $0.25.9 a gallon and the octane was 104. Hair cuts were $0.25, I could go to the movies for $0.50, my mother told me she went to the movies for dime. Talk about ATT I remember party lines. I also remember a time I did not wear glasses, or have a hearing aide, I did not have high blood presure, diabets, or sciatica. I can remember when the History Channel actually showed history and A&E had opera. Such is this thing called progress.

I loved MTV and then VH1...pop up video was the greatest! It's actually still on VH1 at noon EST during the week. I used to turn on both statins and listen to them all day.....watched videos.....loved the V-jays! Today, both stations are crap.

Yeah, the big phone monopoly was Ma Bell.....and I wish they'd never been broken up. We pay waay too much for phone service of any kind these days. Ma Bell did things right, that's why the company was a threat to att and the others.

And Saturday cartoons were the best! I couldn't get out of bed to save my life during the week, but come Saturday, I was up at am, and spent the entire day there. When the cartoons were over, we had a local Saturday Monster Matinee that showed all the B movies that used to terrify me. The first time I saw Nosferatu, I slept with a winter scarf around my neck....only problem was, it was JULY! In a house w/no a/c......just window fans....and I closed the windows because I didn't want him to ooze into the room as fog. There was another one called the Beast with 5 fingers....amputated hand from a murdered man who sought revenge on those who had wronged and killed him. YIKES!

Yeah, those were the good old days of childhood......except I still catch my cartoons!

Hilly, I remember babysitting and watching Don Kirschner's concerts......and American Bandstand. Seems like there was another late night concert show on too, but the name escapes me.......maybe one of you other old farts can refresh my memory! :)

The school district I attended during the apollo 13 mission actually had TV's in every class room and that was about all we did, watch news about it.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Do you remember..... (3/10/2013 8:23:55 AM)

I remember watching TVs in school during 9/11 - then everything started locking down (i lived out east then) and the school closed and we all went home. I was in American History class when the second plane hit.

But yes, AT and T sucked majestically. Remember when you had to pay an 80% surcharge for fucking "call waiting" (or a "party line")? I love Lily Tomlin's bit about that on SNL.

That was from Laugh In originally. Dates us even more.......

I wasn't visually oriented; instead, I was holed up in a small room that was meant for storage (but more often was where I read my books and entertained guests). Mind you, I did love listening to my brand new Walkman, and that thing could play cassette tapes! (It is because of Walkman that I cannot abide ear buds...if it doesn't have a metal bar going over my head, it don't feel right.)

Occasionally I might have watched the Indie show after midnight on MuchMusic. I was eclectic from the get-go, and any kind of music I could discover, I did.
