Yes, I agree. I saw the film and it was highly disturbing.

Especially since it is a true story.

Whoa Nellie! There is a BIG difference between "a true story" and "Based on true events." This is particularly true of just about anything that comes out of Hollywood.

I'm not saying "This is a lie." I'm saying this is a movie and is fiction. The earliest lesson I ever learned (short of lying to my mother, which usually didn't work) about creating fiction was "Start with something that really happened, then twist it, turn it, elaborate it, do whatever it takes to turn it into a good story.

After you see the movie, Harry, and google the real incident that happened in Kentucky you will be astonished at how faithfully the movie depicts the actual events. Similar events occurred many times in a number of locations. The story arc shows what ordinary people will do to others based only upon anonymous Authority and instructions given over the telephone. In addition to a Wiki article there is an interview with the victim and one of the perpetrators on YouTube. Unbelievable incident. More incredible because it happened more than once. A must see.

Right, to all those who've seen this film, do we all agree a) that everyone else should see it and b) that, before seeing it, they should aim to learn as little about it as possible, the better to get the point of it?

I haven't seen it and don't intend to. I really don't need to study up on all the ways humans are awful.

I did look it up on IMDB. I'm sort of laughing here because on another thread I made an assertion that it wasn't hard to find people that are submissive. This story line demonstrates that quite nicely.

Missokyst -> RE: Compliance - the Film (3/5/2013 8:47:47 AM)

It is a true story. I haven't seen the movie but based on the symopsis it is faithful to the real occurance. That story was on 20/20, 60 Mins, and Dateline and periodically runs on Discovery ID.

It is not so simple. The victim was an innocent young woman. She was coerced. The main perpetrator was distracted on a busy night and too trusting of authority. She was a "good soldier."

Yup, you and I see it the same way and I see it as exactly that simple. Almost all humans are "good soldiers" in the face of authority. They are submissive.

<<< Was in the movie "Soylent Green." I was standing by the door as they carried Charlton Heston out shouting that line.

Blimey, weren't you traumatised? You must have been a young kid at the time.

HarryVanWinkle -> RE: Compliance - the Film (3/5/2013 6:56:49 PM)

I was, 17, living in a hippie commune at 925 S. Venice in LA. The needed a lot of scroungy looking people for the crowd scenes. They let us know in advance that they'd pay minimum wage plus all the donuts we could eat to everybody who showed up at 6 AM. We went there three different days. Most of our time, during the 12 hour days was spent smoking and joking and eating donuts. There was also a scene where Heston was trying to get through a crowd and somebody took a shot at him and hit somebody else in the crowd. When the guy who got "hit." went down, my job was to plant my feet on either side of his head to prevent anybody from stepping on it.

I didn't even know that Edward G. Robinson was in the movie until I saw his obituary. It was his last film.

I watched it on a small screen a few years ago. I couldn't pick myself out.

Googled.

Meh.

I never said it was a great movie, just that I was in it.

PeonForHer -> RE: Compliance - the Film (3/6/2013 3:48:25 PM)

I think TH is referring to Compliance, not Soylent Green, Harry. Soylent Green was a bloody excellent film and an utter classic, as pretty much everyone agrees.

But, as for Compliance, OK - SPOILER:

No, this is no 'meh' film, IMHO. One thing that's *really* thought-provoking about it, for me, is that it's not easy to pick out who is the real villain. Is it the phone-caller, or is it the victim's boss? To me: nup. It's neither. The real villain is a social attitude. Sounds poncy and pompous - but I can't think of a more accurate way of putting it.

In the aftermath of the Milgram experiment, other students were tested. The results were far different. The original experiment had been well publicised; people had been shocked - and they'd learned from it. 70s hippie students weren't like their square 'n' straight counterparts of a couple of decades before.

But this film shows that we need to keep re-learning the Milgram lesson: *Do Not Automatically Grovel To Authority*.

Bingo. Soylent Green is one I haven't seen in decades, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'll check Netflix.

Peon, I made up my mind about the villain in this one when the story was in the news. Stupidity, and McDonald's.

littlewonder -> RE: Compliance - the Film (3/6/2013 6:12:02 PM)

eehh....people are stupid. The whole news issue was not a big deal to me. People do this kind of stuff on a daily basis. You just don't always see it in the news.

sad to think that people would go to this level on a daily basis.

@Peon - kind of like the stanford prison experiment also. kind of amazing what people will do when placed in an authority position.

littlewonder -> RE: Compliance - the Film (3/6/2013 6:43:24 PM)

heh...come here to Baltimore. [;)]

theshytype -> RE: Compliance - the Film (3/6/2013 7:22:21 PM)

To me, the real life story sounded almost like fiction when I heard it.  I couldn't believe so many could be duped by a stranger on the phone.  The movie itself was not that great IMO and I don't feel the storyline would have been that good either had it not been based on real events.  The very fact that it's so unbelievable but true made it more interesting to me.
I realize not everyone is a cynic like I am, and even though I want to immediately say they all lacked in common sense, I tend to believe they were just far more trusting human beings than I am.

sexyred1 -> RE: Compliance - the Film (3/6/2013 7:34:20 PM)

Apart from having a sheep like drive to submit to authority, without questioning, to me, this movie also speaks to the fact that people will do what they want to do, despite the red flags. And blaming it on some unseen authority, relieves their guilt that they indulged their dark sides.

That's when I stopped feeling sorry for the victims, especially when they went after the corporations. I hate when people pass blame.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Compliance - the Film (3/6/2013 9:21:32 PM)

I'm going to watch it without looking it up just because you suggested it.

Not that I am a sheeple, just because I trust your opinion.
