I heard about this story the other day - they're unable to continue with the rescue efforts for the man whose bedroom was eaten by a sinkhole. From the outside, the house looks normal, but the insides are caving in. The sinkhole is now 60 feet deep.

What a terrifying story.

That's a pretty horrifying way to die.

Thank God I live in SoCal, where the earth is solid under our feet, and we are safe from such things... Oh wait... nevermind.

Florida has a lot of these every year, but fatalities are rare. Texas, too, and I have a small one (soccer ball sized) in my back yard.

It's terrifying. I feel horrible for his family. His brother jumped into the hole and tried to save him, but was dragged out by a police officer who told him the floor was still caving in. Pretty awful.
We had a small one pop up near our school, in the old, elementary school days, and that was the first time any of us had heard of them.

The articles said that normally you can tell when there's one near a house, because the foundations will show stress fracturing or some sort of damage, but this one is fully contained within the foundation of the house. They had literally just had an insurance inspector come out not too long before this happened, to check for one, and the inspector found nothing.

When I first saw the title of this thread, I figured it was going to get moved to P&R.

It could have been a thread on their vote counting system

I agree, horrifying way to die. We have a lot of underground caves in this area of Missouri so sinkholes happen here as well.

If my house was the one next door I would be sweating bullets.

They've already evacuated the houses next door because they determined that they are compromised by the sinkhole, too. The people in those houses were given 20 minutes to get some belongings and then they had to vacate. Bananas...

We have had them here in Milwaukee. The ones here are usually man made, from a water main break 20 feet under the street. One swallowed a a new escalalade last summer.
