Fightdirecto -> Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/15/2013 9:14:19 AM)

Republicans pandering to Hispanics?
quote:

An advocate for official English in the United States says GOP Senator Marco Rubio's Spanish and English response to the president's State of the Union address pandered to Hispanic-Americans...

Mauro Mujica is chairman of U.S. English, an action group on the issue of making English the official language of the United States...

"It's all part of a pandering to Hispanics, because for some stupid reason, the GOP decided that the Hispanics don't speak any English, when most Hispanics who are here legally speak very good English," Mujica comments. "The Hispanics who really do not speak good English are the illegals who don't vote anyway."

Moreover, he deems it is outrageous that the party is only pandering to Hispanics.

"What about the Chinese, or the people who speak other languages? I don't think [Republicans are] going to get anymore Hispanic votes because they're translating, and, by the way, insulting those Hispanics like myself who speak good English," the English advocate submits. "Why does he need to translate for me?"

Pandering - or just good politics?

Yes. Anymore, good politics includes pandering. (Insert politician's name here) is going after the (insert name of group) vote! Hilary Clinton and Obama have been accused of altering their speech deliveries according to the group they are talking to. While that's not a surprise, neither is it disingenuous. It is simply the way it is.

I would not be surprised if the choice of Rubio and his dual-language delivery wasn't planned.

It's both. "When in Rome (politics) do as Romans (Democrats) do."

Newsflash.

Rubio isn't a Democrat.
He is a Republican who just might become the first "Anchor Baby" president.

The surest sign that the progressive movement is gaining is that the rightists are co-opting it.

I saw this thread on the scroll and the first thing that popped into my head is "Don't they pander to/from everybody?" Haven't read any replies yet.

They better hope their bigots don`t find out..... [:(]

That wasn't the point. The point was when in politics, do as the Democrats do. While I don't completely agree with RacerJim, he is partially right. But, he is ignoring that the GOP does it just as much as the Democrats.

YN -> RE: Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/15/2013 3:49:03 PM)

Please. Isn't this what politicians, worldwide do?

At `17% Latinos make up a larger percentage of your population then black men and women do (~9%); Irish (~10%); Germans (`16%); English (~8%); never mind the lesser ethnic percentages.

It is surprising you complain about it, since any politician worth the name would be derelict if he did not do such "pandering."

I think your complaint is motivated by the fact your GOP is doing a better work of it then you party is.

I recall your partisans here pulled sockpuppets out of their closets when I stated that in general the average Latino immigrant to your country along with those in your country since even before you took it from the English, was far more socially conservative and family oriented then they thought, and only the racism displayed by a wide segment of the GOP towards Latino immigrants keep the GOP from making even greater inroads into the Latino vote. Of course they were telling me there was no cultural difference between a Puerto Rican, Haitian or Cuban and a mestizo from Latin America, so this shows the ignorance the"left" in the United States operates under.

Your Democrats will learn this the hard way, if they continue in their ways. It appears your GOP has started up the learning curve.

DarkSteven -> RE: Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/15/2013 4:36:39 PM)

The private sector has been publishing English and Spanish text for decades. It's nothing more than an acknowledgement that there are a lot of consumers that prefer to read Spanish.

For that matter, Pope John Paul II led Mass in several languages to send a very clear message that different cultures were welcome within his Church.

The GOP is doing nothing new by following that lead.

WantsOfTheFlesh -> RE: Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/15/2013 5:03:21 PM)

its a good move. should reach out to diverse groups & make the party more inclusive.

It's not "good" politics.

It's politics.

Wow....you're over 60 and this is news?

Hillwilliam -> RE: Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/15/2013 10:39:03 PM)

Here is the ultimate question.

Will the GOP really become more inclusive or will they try to just cram more people into their little narrow minded box?

Exactly. The Republican National Committee is in a "damned if you do and damned if you don't" position. No matter what they do, some of their own party gets pissed off.

Then piss em off. What are the evangelical wingnuts gonna do? Vote for a Democrat?
They'll vote R because they have no choice. Bring the damn party back to its core values of Fiscal conservancy, Small government and staying the fuck out of a person's personal life unless he is adversly affecting others.

Moonhead -> RE: Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/16/2013 5:15:04 AM)

I'd feel a lot more sympathetic if they hadn't invited the idiots who are getting pissed off into their party in the first place.

Owner59 -> RE: Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/16/2013 8:50:48 AM)

It`s all very window dressy anyway.

The very French sounding Reince Priebus, head of the RNC,recently(post election) said that the GOP does NOT have to change their message.......

That all they had to do(now get this) was "smile more"

graceadieu -> RE: Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/17/2013 12:11:50 PM)

If Republicans want to be successful in the future, they have to expand their base outside of middle-aged/elderly white straight Christians, who are making up a smaller and smaller portion of the public.

But that means more than just having a politician give a speech in Spanish. And I think that seriously engaging with the interests of a diverse population will alienate some of their existing base. So I guess that's a hard choice they'll have to make.

DOM68005 -> RE: Is the GOP "pandering to Hispanics"? (2/17/2013 12:21:41 PM)

This is nothing new. George Bush was doing it as governor of Texas and ever since. At one time, it was so obvious, the liberal press paid a lot of ink on the topic.
