The US now may be at least one of the world's largest bourbon exporters.

Bourbon is only made in the US.

Umm which would be why we would need to export?? Japanese might like some

I think what Ken was saying is that we're the ONLY Bourbon exporter.

And the best commercially available American Whiskey is Tennessee sipping whiskey.

As for bourbon, the definition of Bourbon has changed somewhat in recent years, sorry boys, but it has.

quote:

For a whiskey to qualify as bourbon, the law--by international agreement--stipulates that it must be made in the USA. It must be made from at least 51% and no more than 79% Indian corn, and aged for at least two years. (Most bourbon is aged for four years or more.) The barrels for aging can be made of any kind of new oak, charred on the inside. Nowadays all distillers use American White Oak, because it is porous enough to help the bourbon age well, but not so porous that it will allow barrels to leak. It must be distilled at no more than 160 proof (80% alcohol by volume). Nothing can be added at bottling to enhance flavor or sweetness or alter color. The other grains used to make bourbon, though not stipulated by law, are malted barley and either rye or wheat. Some Kentucky bourbon makers claim that the same limestone spring water that makes thoroughbred horses' bones strong gives bourbon whiskey its distinctive flavor.

Bourbon can be made anywhere in the U.S., but all but a couple of brands are made in Kentucky. Only the state of Kentucky can produce bourbon with its name on the label. The name comes from Bourbon county in the central bluegrass region of Kentucky. This county was named in 1785 to honor the French royal family and was once the major transshipment site for shipping distilled spirits down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. Barrels shipped from there were stamped with the county's name, which then became the name of this kind of whiskey. Interestingly, there are no distillers in Bourbon county, Kentucky right now.
What's the difference between bourbon and whiskey?

There is even a bourbon made in Texas, and a few made in other states. Now, in my opinion, American whiskey can only be properly made using the water from the mountains of western North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

The water in the Piedmont area is unsuitable for good whiskey, but they actually make the stuff commercially in that region.

There are no legal whiskey producers in the mountains of North Carolina.

Never! Bourbon is a product of Kentucky corn, Kentucky soil, Kentucky geology, Kentucky climate, Kentucky soul. I'll hear no more of this claptrap. Next you'll be telling us is that Champagne can be made in California. Nonsense, I say!

On this I agree wholeheartedly. I was in the business for years, fine wines and spirits, I've tasted just about god-damn everything, and indeed there is no finer spirit than Tennessee sipping whiskey. Bosh on heretics who claim otherwise!

There, I feel better now.

Uh, from the hollers of Madison county comes a corn whiskey, a barley whiskey and a rum type beverage made with molasses. Between 15 to 30 gallons of the three holy spirits are made a month, and by family tradition is put up in oak, maple and wild cherry casks... It is made for family, reunions, weddings, funerals, your basic mountain folk special gatherings. This has been done since the late 1800's.

Every few months I get two quarts of each. Two cousins of mine and I are the first direct descendants not born in those mountains.

I would venture the proof is about 180 to 195, and by family tradition, it has to be aged, some of it was put up in the 20's.

Uncut it is smooth going down, then a five alarm fire when it hits your stomach, but sure is good.

Most bourbon is made in Kentucky but not all. Virginia Gentleman, for instance, is made in Virginia.

The law say as long as you distill it in the US and follow some other rules you can call your whisky bourbon.

Law schmaw. What good are those, anyway? I do really like american whiskeys, but still cringe at calling them bourbons. And I think that says more about me than anything else.

Jeff, no one likes a braggart, but everyone likes someone who shares. Just out of curiousity, do you get looked at like an alien when you go visit the old country?

Tommy that's because in the south anyone that can't prove "heritage" (usually by reminding said person you went to school with them, their child or cousin)...actually does make you an alien!!

Just FYI, regarding Virginia Gentleman...

A. Smith Bowman Distillery is the oldest family-owned bourbon distillery in the United States. The company is located near the site where Elijah Craig, the inventor of bourbon whiskey, was born and raised. At that time, what would become the state of Kentucky was actually part of Virginia. Craig would eventually move west to Kentucky, leaving a legacy of bourbon whiskey in the Old Dominion.

Oh, I know. I'm one of the "off the reservation" cousins. When I go visit the old country, which I really like and do as frequently as I can, I get my fair share of looks in bars and grocery stores, et al. When people learn that I'm related how I am, it's a whole different vibe.

There's lots of tourist traffic in the area, so that definitely has an impact. Whether that makes people more or less suspicious of/ curious about outsiders, I don't know.

It is by no means certain that Craig invented bourbon and the distillery he built was in Kentucky long after he left Virginia.

I lived there for about 12 years so, no, no one gives me a problem.

And if I had a way to get some to my collarme friends, I would. I figure if K got a quart of the home stuff, he might swear off the store bought stuff.

Local history helps. I've never lived there for any significant length of time.

We don't have any distillers in our family, but do have a bit of it around. I really enjoy the stuff. I'd like to learn to do it myself, but I'm not in a place (for a lot of reasons) where I'm comfortable doing that as of yet.

From all of this fuss you'd think that it was a half decent whisky rather than Jim Bean, but stronger.
