I trust my instincts, I just don't always heed them. If I ignore the warnings my instincts give I generally end up regretting it. Sometimes you want something so bad, you just get stubborn and try to have it even though it's wrong, bad for you.

Warning! Warning! Warning!
I have not read the posts on this thread and am responding directly to the OP.

Long ago I was taught by my Paternal Grandfather, my Father and trained in Lodge to trust my gut feeling. many combat vets I know learned to do this too and it saved their lives. Every time I have gone against my gut feeling and even though my subsequent actions and choices were both logical and text book, I have would up in such deep shit that I nearly drowned. This included 4 times in intensive care with less than 24 hours to live. It is not in any situation for me a selffilling prophasy just me makingthe wrong judgement call. Conversly every time when I have followed my Gut feeling aven against protocol, text books or logic, somehow some way I have not just survives but came out on top smelling like roses.... Luck of the Irish? probably and an absolute faith in my instincts and my Goddess who whilst being a bitch and who will take me to break point, She never gives me more than I can deal with.....

I absolutely trust them. When I look back at mistakes...they were from not listening to My gut.I can get the feelings online,on the phone or in person.A couple have slipped threw that radar,I can tell you it doesnt happen often.

This thing started when I was 17 right after I had lightning strike something I was touching all I remember is a white light going up My arm,and My hair was full of static.

Dont know what happened dont care...just know that I am eternally grateful.

When talking with someone new to you do you trust your instincts about that person? Have you ever met someone and you just "know" that this person is someone you could really connect with? Or has your "gut" feeling betrayed you in the past and you no longer trust that feeling? When you look back on the mistakes you've made do you ever try and analyze the why and how it happened and how it could have been different?

I trust mine. However, life has shown me that I very rarely listen to them.

LaTigresse -> RE: Do you trust your instincts? (6/21/2006 11:54:55 AM)

I do trust my instincts more than I trust my heart or brain.

Chris, don't feel bad. I have been there and done that. For me, its been the getting older that has taught me to listen more intently and actually act on those instincts. I don't know if it is because the recovery process was always so painful or if I just have less patience for the bs.

kyraofMists -> RE: Do you trust your instincts? (6/21/2006 2:01:48 PM)

I trust my instincts with regards to people, but I am most likely to make a quick decision when they are telling me to avoid someone.  I have learned in my life that not paying attention when my skin starts to crawl is going to lead to disaster.  It isn't often that I meet someone and my skin starts crawling, but when it does I make a point to completely avoid that person.  It is usually a snap judgment on my part and I don't second guess it, even when others tell me how wonderful that person is.

When my instincts tell me this is someone I can connect with I listen, but I am less likely to make a quick decision about them and will just let the relationship flow naturally.

My instinct (or intuition) is usually dead-on.  But sometimes its  like I have to go far enough to make sure Im right.   And then I end up hurt or disppointed...and yes I do analyze it afterwards.  Having the intuition is the easy part; *yielding to it* is something Im still working on.

Pretty much what I was going to say.
I trust my gut feeling is right, but I ocassionally fail to follow my instincts.

"Instinct is the nose of the mind." - Madame de Girardin

I like to think that what I call "instinct" is actually the sum total of my life's experiences providing guidance and yes I do trust my instincts... which is much easier to do face to face than online.  I haven't quite got the hang of online thing... the exchanges always feel fairly stiff to me.  I spent some time emailing with this lovely woman just recently, my instinct told me that she was something quite special and although it did not work out - the exchange actually filled me with a new sense of possibilities with the whole finding what I seek online thing.

As someone posted earlier, online all we have to go on are our instincts.   Though I will add that I make allowances online that I do not when dealing with someone face to face.

Yes, I do trust my instincts. I trusted them when I met my Dom online and knew without a doubt that he was the one for me. I also met a woman that was supposed to be my friend online. She knew my Dom and I and was privy to many of our plans for our future. I knew there was something wrong, but my Dom liked her and I didn't push it. Well, this woman stabbed us both in the back in the worst way and caused a tremendous hurt that wasn't her place to cause. I learned a good lesson that day and will not go agaisnst my instincts again. In fact my Dom has order me not to.

I try to honor them, if I can start to tell something is off, I have to make a conscious effort to trust myself that it is off. I've  convinced myself I'm just being paranoid/whatever too long in a few situations. That being said, I try to start talking to/meeting someone without prejudice.

Sinergy -> RE: Do you trust your instincts? (6/21/2006 8:38:47 PM)

Hello A/all,

There was an article about sequelae of acquired blindness in people who experienced brain injury to the vision center.

These are people who lived in perpetual darkness and could see nothing.  Yet when you gave these people a red block and asked them what color it was, they would almost invariable respond with
the correct color.  The point the author was attempting to make is that the signals from the rods and cones in the eyeball were still being sent out, but the part of the brain which could cognitively interpret these signals to allow the person to "see" the object was gone.  Yet the peripheral parts of the brain could interpret the individual stimuli enough to determine an object's color despite being blind.

Where I am going with this is that "instinct" may well be parts of one's sensory system giving you input about something which the cognitive part cannot really put together.  Is it relevant to the situation?  Absolutely.  Can you put it in words?  Doubtful.

There is a wonderful book called "The Gift Of Fear" by Gavin DeBecker which touches on this subject.  Human beings have developed instinctual responses in order to ensure their survival.
It may not be a great idea to ignore them.

I'm glad you mentioned that book Sinergy.  I read it and thought it was a great book on the subject of listening to your instincts.

BreakMeShakeMe -> RE: Do you trust your instincts? (6/21/2006 9:07:23 PM)

Hi SJ.... I got to thinking of your post after the e-mail I sent you. And i've been fighting my insticts sense Monday. I always thought I could trust mine. After finding out mine let me down... it's been really hard to handle. But  I found out tonight... it's wasn't my instincts that let me down. Because I was going on the same ones from over a year ago. So it's not me that changed.. it was the person in question. She did. Not I. So it sort of changes things... somewhat of course. Not as a whole. She's still breathing.. so my instincts are still working... or she wouldn't be....LOL

Thank you again for your response in e-mail. You are most definately a Jewel in my book.... My best to you and yours.....

well for me i trust my instincts always. i have learned some very hard lessons in the past that when my instincts are saying something, 99.99% of the time they are never wrong. it's only when i chose to ignore them do i get the proverbial bite in the tuckus......

I used to not trust my gut. I very much do so now. I've never 'known' that somone would be the be-all end all (not sure that this is possible, bell curve and all) but when I get that 'run' thing rattling around, I don't walk anymore I make them run :-)

ShiftedJewel -> RE: Do you trust your instincts? (6/22/2006 3:37:58 AM)
