MistressDarkArt -> Kitteh Experts...Ideas? (2/2/2013 10:57:57 PM)

My cat Boobie has had mucous-y blood in his poop since I adopted him 3 years ago. The vet can find nothing wrong with him and recommended a bland diet either made at home or bought from the office. He will not eat it, and I'd have to separate him from my other two kittehs to force him to.

So far I've tried:
Science Diet Indoor, Sensitive Stomach, Hairball, Optimal Health, Prescription
Blue Sensitive
Wellness chicken & rice
Kirkland chicken and rice
California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato

All have been dry food. He doesn't like wet food (go figure). All but the Sci Di Indoor gives him diarrhea along with the blood and that seems to be all the cats' favorite. He loves Greenies and gets them once in a while with the other cats...they seem to make no difference in the bloody poop situation.

He acts totally normal: playful, affectionate, normal weight, active, bright-eyed, thick glossy coat. He is an indoor cat with free access to his 'catiary' outside where there is grass available, but I've never seen him eat any.

The two other cats have no dietary issues. I am totally stumped. Any ideas?

Yea, get a new vet. Even on the off chance it is nothing harmful, the vet should be able to tell you why it is happening.

Think about it this way...if you went to the doctor with the same problem and he simply said nothing was wrong, would that be acceptable? Even if it was simply the cat has hemmoroids (sp?) and there is nothing that needs to be done, something is still causing it to happen.

By the way, hemmoroids was simply the first butt issue that came to mind.

Notsweet -> RE: Kitteh Experts...Ideas? (2/3/2013 7:10:02 AM)

I'd definitely check with another vet myself.

Now, here's one everyone has had before, I know. Big ol' fat boy is starting to pee in places he's not supposed to pee in. I can't put anything on the bathroom floor. He got the kitchen throw rug, and the latest was the floor end of a blanket. I've used bleach, lemon juice, lysol, febreze, baking soda, vinegar trying to take the mark away so he'll stop, all to no avail. He's a little bitchy lately because I'm feeding him just a little less, trying to get him to lose a llittle weight. He yells all the time, and I know he's mad at me, but the peeing has got to stop.

Any suggestions?

Try live mice.

Are there other cats in the house?
Have you tried cleaning the litter box more frequently?
Have you tried putting out more litter boxes?
How much less food are you giving?
Have you taken him to the vet about this?

Duskypearls -> RE: Kitteh Experts...Ideas? (2/3/2013 8:02:54 AM)

Mistress, check him out for hemorroids, viral/bacterial gut, and gastritis. A good, holistic vet might be helpful.

Might need a bland boiled chicken/rice diet for a while.

Consider whether the following herbs (as an infusion) might assist his gut if gastritis is diagnosed: burdock root, mallow, slippery elm bark, comfrey root, fennel seed, Irish moss, and chamomile

First things first. Eliminate the possibility of a urinary tract/kidney infection. Is he neutered?

My mom has had several cats with this type of condition. I think she has had some success with Innova and I believe diamond naturals.

Adding an extra litter box really might help. Some cats like one for one type of business and another for the other type. I know there is a standard of how many litter boxes you should have per cat, but I can't remember where I read that or what it is.

It's 1=1 for each cat. 1 cat = 2 boxes, 2 cats = 3 boxes...

impishlilhellcat -> RE: Kitteh Experts...Ideas? (2/3/2013 8:41:18 AM)

Actually according to petfinder it's 1.5 cat litters per cat. So if you have one cat you really need two cat litters. Also, it's really not atypical for cats to be extremely picky about their litters.

Have him checked for urinary tract/kidney issues.
Try cheapo vodka to erase the scent marks.

TheBanshee -> RE: Kitteh Experts...Ideas? (2/3/2013 9:50:22 AM)

You might want to try - maybe even just for a couple of weeks, to cook him food yourself such as chicken and rice. The processed food might be a little hard on him. See if it helps for a short time. You can cook a batch and freeze servings in little baggies. You might find it works out cheaper than the fancy foods - but if you decide to do it for the long term you should check the full nutrition your cat needs are satisfied maybe by adding some other elements to the dish (but add them one at a time after the chicken and rice and see if there is a difference) or by adding some vitamin boosters.

Your cat needs to get to the vet - it sounds to me like he's really trying to make a point - he probably has a urinary tract infection or perhaps diabetes. From your note it sounds like a new behavior - he's telling you he has a problem!

I'll agree with the other suggestions to have your big boy checked by a vet, but are you sure he is
actually peeing and not just marking his territory? Most males, if they have not been "fixed" will do this.

Also, (if it's just a case of him marking territory) avoid bleach or anything else with a strong scent.
This actually seems to work in opposite to what you are trying to eliminate, as he will then want to
wipe out the strong odors with his own.

Thanks Dusky/everyone for your suggestions. I don't mean to be argumentative but I can't get him to eat home-prepared chicken/rice...all he wants is dry food. Every time I bring home a new type of food he can't wait to claw his way into the bag like he's starving or something. As soon as the thrill is gone with the new food, he settles down to his usual amounts.

Impish, I'll try Innova and Diamond next.

As for the vet...he is competent and doesn't seem concerned since all Boo's tests came back normal. He also thought gastritis, and recommended the bland diet for this but Boobie will not cooperate without a big fuss. Since all the cats are used to eating out of the same bowl and are very communal about eating together, he refuses to eat when I place him and his 'special' food in another room. He just cries and yowls until I let him out to be with the other two.

He has a few behavioral issues that might be related somehow to this. He was an escapee from an abusive kennel who lived on the streets for a few months before he started coming around calling for my other two boys. They liked him, and that hideous kennel didn't give a rat's ass if they never saw him again. So I had him totally checked out at the vet; he was declared healthy and came to live with us. He quickly became a 'mama's' boy and if he's not playing with the other two needs to spend a lot of time on my lap or physically touching me with his paw.

He's the one that will pee in a litter box but poops on the floor of the catiary. At first I thought he was trying to show me he had worms or something else wrong (including the bleeding) but after many vet visits his behavior is the same. I think he was never properly litter-boxed trained during his rough start in life. I can live with the pooping on the floor...I can even live with the spots of blood as long as I know he is not suffering.

Perhaps the herbs Dusky recommended will help, and I will try samples of the food brands Impish recommended.

Thanks again, all. I'll keep you posted.

He's not interested. He might play with them when they are dumb enough to enter the catiary, but he won't eat them.

masmiss -> RE: Kitteh Experts...Ideas? (2/3/2013 8:58:53 PM)

I had a cat with the same issue. Took her to two vets. Neither could find anything wrong with her so I stopped worrying about it. This started when Daphne was about 4. She lived to be 18 and died from complications from diabetes (diagnosed when she was 14) and nothing to do with her bloody poop.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Kitteh Experts...Ideas? (2/4/2013 12:30:19 PM)

Thanks, Masmiss. since he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort or showing other signs of ill health, I'll just continue to monitor him.

EsotericLady -> RE: Kitteh Experts...Ideas? (2/4/2013 3:09:09 PM)

It's manufactured by "Out" PetCare. OXY-FAST stain and odor remover. Removes the odors and the stains. Works on old and new problem areas. Safe around kids and other pets. Walmart caries it.
If you can't find it, there's several removers available at pet stores like PetSmart.
