Balls up?

Not an expression here. Does it mean the opposite of balls down?

No, it means 'something of a rather awkward and embarrassing mess'. ;-)

Can you give us an example of how the Queen would use it in a sentence?

Baroana,

I don't think the Queen would (if your post was tongue in cheek, please disregard!)!

You are correct and I think Baroana was trifling with me with her impudent question.

Berk is cockney rhyming slang - Berkeley Hunt = c*nt. It's not as harsh as c*nt as an insult; somewhat stronger than just 'idiot', though.

One of the three sticks behind the batsman that the bowler aims at in cricket.

Don't you mean "having a laugh" or "taking a piss"?

Normally, yes - in this context it actually refers to the cricket pitch. For our American friends, a sticky wicket is where rain has affected the cricket pitch and due to it still drying out, the bounce of the ball is uneven and difficult for the batsman to predict.

So basically a sticky wicket is a difficult and/or unpredictable circumstance.

That's more because most people don't know the provenance you've cited for the word than anything else, though.

So basically the same thing as tits up?

Not that "tits up" makes a lot of sense in the first place.

Not exactly the same, but similar.
As a rule, only a real noun can be said to go tits up, whereas almost anything that's gone badly wrong can be described as a balls up.

True. But you know how it is, if a word's used without much venom behind it often enough, it becomes a word that just isn't that bad. The reverse happens, too, pretty frequently. 'Vagina' and 'cunt' can mean the same thing, but yobboes haven't traditionally spat the words 'You vagina!' at reviled enemies.

Incidentally did you know that bollocks are the "The pulley-blocks at the head of topmasts"? (WordWeb)

Which meaning came first - that of the the droopy, hairy things, or that of the nautical things?

A question for us all to ponder this night.

Probably describes the position of tits if a woman's lying flat on her back, dead or unconscious.
