How weird and a little sad.

vincentML -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/17/2013 7:33:36 AM)

Hard to believe it wasn't an invention by him that got out of control, isn't it? Heard a sports talk guy opining this morning that Teo will face a lot of tough questions when he gets to the NFL Combine, and this fiasco will set him down in the draft.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/17/2013 9:16:58 AM)

I don't think this fiasco will lower his draft prospects near as much as his 60 minutes spent either on his back or waving at bama running backs as they blew by him.
His coach in another article sympathized with him saying that he was so open before and he thinks this might make him cynical and suspicios.
Maybe that's a good thing. Which would you rather have make you cynical and suspicious?

A: An online gf that turns out to be a 'fake' in January
B: An agent that steals your money in June.

DarkSteven -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/17/2013 9:40:45 AM)

After the Dimitrius Underwood fiasco, NFL teams will be afraid of drafting a nutcase.

Guys, I just get the impression that he's real straightlaced, and maybe a little gullible.

And what about Troy Palamau of the Steelers supposedly knowing her? Bizarre.

LizDeluxe -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/17/2013 11:02:31 AM)

I'll bet Oprah Winfrey is hella pissed about this. [:D]

blacksword404 -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/17/2013 12:03:26 PM)

FR

People are killing it with songs that should be on his playlist.

The chi-lites "have you seen her"
Marvin Gaye "distant lover"
Zap and roger troutman " computer love"

cloudboy -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/18/2013 3:12:27 PM)

Classic male-sub knuckle-head behavior.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/18/2013 3:17:54 PM)

Hahahahaha. Teoing
Personally...I think he was conning everyone.

kalikshama -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/18/2013 3:21:19 PM)

When I was at the gym this AM this was on the news - but in much vaguer terms than your link - thanks!

Hawaiian's and their fake girlfriends. Maybe it's a Hawaiian thing.

jj292 -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/18/2013 4:16:16 PM)

Either this was a hoax on his part to gain sympathy or he's very naive and got epically "catfished."

It's a strange story.

TheLilSquaw -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/18/2013 5:08:23 PM)

I don't get the impression that HE knew that she didn't die.
When he found out, I think he was embarrassed and didn't know how to handle it.

I have seen a lot of men / women fake their deaths in order to end an online relationship.

It's rather sad.
An extreme catfish case.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/18/2013 7:13:26 PM)

An appropriate song by ARS

Bizarre and funny. I hope they leak his Wonderlic score during the combine...I am curious.

I've heard the guy is Mormon and really, extremely naive. Apparently it was two men and a girl behind the hoax and they scammed him all along. When it came time to meet, they had to make up something, so of course car wreck and leukemia.

How many times do we run into this on the forums here? Someone's Master died of cancer, the slave passed away from a car wreck, etc....only to show up under another name a week later? LOL

The dude isn't the brightest bulb. Can you imagine the ribbing he's getting in the locker room? You gotta admit it's funny though, mostly I think because we all know that this is a common scam around here.

ETA: I had also read that his family went into interviews telling the world that he had met the girlfriend more than once. So when the press asked Manti about his family saying this his response was that he lied to his parents because he was embarrassed to tell them that he had fallen in love with a girl he had never met.

Level -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/19/2013 6:18:56 PM)

I think that's pretty accurate, lw.

Huffington Post is wondering if he's gay, and if it was all a way to try to hide it.

littlewonder -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/19/2013 7:44:28 PM)

I've heard that too but I think he's just a naive little boy who is extremely gullible.

When I heard the story I laughed because the first thing that came to my mind is the male subs who come here with their similar stories lol.

muhly22222 -> RE: Manti T'eo (1/20/2013 5:14:27 PM)

Bill Simmons, AKA the Sports Guy, wrote a mailbag column about the Manti Te'o story here http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8856794/the-all-teo-mailbag

I'm inclined to believe that Te'o was initially fooled, and then felt too embarrassed to own up to being fooled initially. So he kept on telling the lie. I don't want to be so cynical as to think that he deliberately set out to conduct this hoax on the general public, but I don't know how somebody could be so naive for so long.

On the other hand, to borrow an idea from the Simmons column: perhaps it was Belichick trying to manipulate the NFL Draft and ensure that Te'o falls all the way to the Patriots.
