Jewelcrafter -> Can't do business with ALT.com (1/5/2013 9:35:09 PM)

I discovered something strange a few days ago. I tried buying a membership with ALT.com and my card was declined. I thought strange. I have money on it. call my bank to find out what happened and it turns out my bank refuses to do business with that site. Something about where the money is transfered though if labled high fraud risk by the government, so my bank won't do buisness with them. Anyone else ever encounter something like this or know what country handles ALT's money transfers?

There are certain credit cards that will not allow you to make any kind of sex type purchases or if it's a company that has racked up a large amount of complaints, they may turn it down. Also if alt.com goes out to be paid through a foreign entity, the card could see it again, as risky because it could be a scammer or hacker. I would read the fine print of your agreement with your card and see if there is any mention.

If they are declining it because they think someone else used it in another country and not you, then you could call them and let them know that. When my daughter went to Turkey with a card, she used it there and it was declined because we both forgot to call and tell them of the travel.

I did call to find out what happened. My card was actually locked for as few days and screwed up some other payments. The transaction went under fan something, so it was discreet and didn't say it was any kind of sex site. My bank said that the country that fan name goes through they won't do buisness with, but it changes everyday depending on the information the government sends them and if I try again later it might work.

Sounds like a lot of hassle to sign up for a site, imo.

Muttling -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/6/2013 1:44:50 AM)

For on-line purchases in general, you're better off using a pre-paid visa card from Walmart or something similar. They rarely have any restrictions on them and the most you can be defrauded out of is the amount that you put onto the card. Using your debit card is a HUGE risk for a number of reasons, one of them being the card getting locked as you just described.

Jewelcrafter -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/6/2013 2:27:20 AM)

Yeah. I didn't think of that. I don't buy much online, but that has been slowly changing. I have a prepaid card. Think I'll put some money back on it.

LaTigresse -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/6/2013 5:26:45 AM)

What does this have to do with BDSM other than the fact you were trying to do business with an alternative life style website?

Jewelcrafter -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/6/2013 5:42:24 AM)

Is this the wrong forum for this topic? I apologize if it is. I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience or perhaps knew where they did buisness out off. If this topic doesn't go here how do I go about moving or deleting it?

TheLilSquaw -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/6/2013 5:54:57 AM)

Jewelcrafter,
Only the Mods can move threads and they will if they don't think this is the right board for it.

Personally I think a ccc not allowing purchases to an "adult" site can and does affect people in the lifestyle and in the BDSM community especially if they are doing so because they deem it immoral or inappropriate vs simply high risk due to the billing country.

graceadieu -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/6/2013 9:08:43 AM)

I wonder if the reason isn't some morality issue, but just them having a problem with people claiming it was a fraudulent charge and getting it reversed. I've heard that some strip clubs now require you to provide your fingerprint if you pay with a card because so many guys claim it was fraud and reverse the charge after their wife sees "Foxxy Lady Club" or whatever on the bill.

What bank are you using?

In Germany Chael and I had our accounts and cards through the on-post bank there. My cards worked fine in all over Europe as I traveled. To include visiting the UK a couple times. Then the last time I was in the UK my card stopped working about 2 days into my being there. Thankfully I had pocket money and had a return ticket to Germany already... I could get home okay, I just needed to eat really small amounts for the next 3 days.

From that point on my card never worked in the UK again.

None of the other cards I've had with other banks since have worked there when buying online. This came up repeatedly at one time when I was trying to buy bras online from Bravissimo, the place I used to go to in London to buy my bras from when in Europe. I ordered, got a note a couple days later that the bank refused my card. I call the bank and they tell me Bravissimo refused my card. I try again, same thing. I try Chael's (with that bank) and same thing. I just let it go.

With Wells Fargo, who we've been with for about 3 years now (we were with Wachovia before and they took them over) more and more in the past two years this problem has expanded. I can barely purchase anything online overseas unless it's from China.

I can't purchase from some US stores online that I'd previously bought things from just fine.

Outside of Wells Fargo, about a year ago this has started with Chael's Alaska USA account, too.

Same situation with all of them. Lots of money in the accounts used. We keep getting told by the person/company we try to buy from that the card got declined. The bank either tells us the site/company declined our card and not them or says they triggered a fraud thing and we can't purchase from there. When they are told "we've bought from them 7 times in the past, including once last month!" or such, they tell us "sorry, there's nothing we can do to fix it".

Jewelcrafter -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/6/2013 11:23:34 AM)

I use Guaranty Bank. What urked me the most was they fell back on "The government said we shouldn't do business with them, so we're not," excuse. It's my money and its really none of their or the government's business where I want to spend it so long as the purchase is legal. Then they tell me this can change on a daily basis, so I may not be able to buy from a certain country today, but next week I will have no problem, but then I could be locked out for the next three months. They told me they "Chose" not to pay for that purchase, with immediately sent a red flag up that they disapproved of what I was trying to purchase. Then the government excuse just bothered me more. I want to try again with a different card and see if I have the same problem, but I'll try with a pre-paid card for safety concerns that were brought up. I may do that for all purchases I make online from now on. Hm. I found a new use for that dormant card. [:D]

With the law sitting on the presidents desk that allows "the government" access to cell records, all email, blog & internet posts without a warrent" & that they can use evidence found there to get search warrents for property...it doesn't really suprise me that banks have taken a nanny state position as well[:'(]
Something tells me the next 4 years are going to be worse than the last.

theRose4U -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/7/2013 5:33:03 PM)

Got an article on FB this morning, apparently BofA is now holding deposits of gun manufacturers & sellers "because the bank doesn't believe gun sales are a good thing". So legal licensed seller isn't allowed to receive money at their bank for good they can legally sell...my previous statement about a nanny state dawning seems more true than I previously believed.

Powergamz1 -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/7/2013 5:39:36 PM)

I've heard of various money handling entitities telling *merchants* that they would not let them have a seller account because they were selling sex oriented stuff.

I've not heard of any bank taking a customer's money, and then refusing to honor the voucher for a perfectly legal purchase.

If that isn't an example of defalcation, it certainly has to violate some similar statutes or regulations.

theRose4U -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/7/2013 6:22:12 PM)

Not up on my banking law so no idea.

I do know that the MJ industry in CO has had a rough time with banks to the point that the state banking comission is deciding if they can start a community credit union specific to their industry. Seems like a monsterously bad idea to me with state & federal law in disagreement but...suppose lure of credit cards supercedes common sense

theRose4U -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/7/2013 6:41:57 PM)

Here is article on BofA gun sales:
BofA gun sales not allowed

Lucylastic -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/7/2013 6:47:56 PM)

HOnestly.....it has to do with mastercard and the banks, not the bloody government, MC and Visa have been doing this on and off for years. Ive been dealing with it for over twelve years, regarding my BDSM site, and still having it over the corset site. because its adult orientated, they deny and allow different sites and then reject them at a whim. I had an email telling me that mastercard will not accept payments from canada just before christmas... you can pay the processor, by debit, e check, wire transfer, visa, Amex, discover, etc, but not mastercard... its liable to be two months before they "change their standards. Prepaid is the best way to go for any adult purchase.

littlewonder -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/7/2013 6:52:06 PM)

I know PayPal does not allow the purchase of adult items if they realize the name of the merchant is an adult site.

TheBanshee -> RE: Can't do business with ALT.com (1/7/2013 7:22:18 PM)

My teenaged son received a prepaid card for Christmas last year. He wanted to use it for membership of his online game. It isn't an "adult" game, mind you - its not even a controversial game. When he went to use the prepaid credit card to buy the membership subscription it was declined. I called the customer service number and got through eventually to someone who assured me the card was good. Tried again - declined. Went to the local 7-11, bought a pack of gum with it (to check it out) and it worked. Hmmmm....called customer service again. Eventually I was told that they didn't accept that kind of purchase on the prepaid card.

So don't make an assumption that the prepaid card will work when your "real" card won't.
