ORIGINAL: TheHeretic Been here. Done this. Used the t-shirt to wax the car. Have fun. I remember that thread, and it was quite an education for me. According to his Wikipedia entry, before apparently losing his mind, Westboro honcho Fred Phelps was a dogged and effective civil rights lawyer. The profile notes, "In the 1980s, Phelps received awards from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Blacks in Government and the Bonner Springs branch of the NAACP, for his work on behalf of black clients." That discovery sparked two thoughts: (a) It was a sobering reminder that not everyone fits into simple left/right boxes. (b) As the abbess discovers at the end of The Bridge of San Luis Rey, you never know where you may find grace. Of course, here the discovery is coupled with the heartbreak of knowing how Phelps's crusading zeal has morphed antigay hatred.
