Bans are a social tool to deal with a problem that they don't actually know how to solve or the real causes dont want to be faced.

We have bans on drugs and underage sex

Both are utter failures, both fail because we dont look at the underlying issues, both undermine respect for law and order. Bans are embraced because they allow a belief something is being done and allows us to avoid the deeper, far more difficult issues.

Oddly enough, if we had a decent health care system it would go a long way in solving a host of social ills.

I'm not sure that's true: we have a decent healthcare system over here, and the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe, so it hasn't had that big an impact on the underaged rumpy pumpy.

That's because Britain has a very capitalistic individual atomised society. Most European countries have far less teenage pregnancies and other social problems than Britain, which almost always, except with guns, looks towards the USA for solutions, rather than our more social democratic neighbours.

Gimme a break...!

Like all your fellow gun-humpers in denial, you're all about what won't work and if you say it often enough and loud enough, you ultimately preach it as gospel.

Despite living on the other side of the planet, I doubt there's a health system in the world that could've done any better at patching up what they could of the latest slaughter.

Why do Americans "need" military weapons out in the civilian population? Or any full auto? Or semi-auto? Pretty sure neither of the latter were around when the holy 2nd amendment was drafted....

Blanket bans (of anything) don't work 100% or even in a timely manner. But they do begin a culture change - and that's what your nation needs more than anything.

Focus.
