kdsub -> My idea for gun control (12/21/2012 10:54:02 AM)

Since it will be almost impossible to have meaningful dialog on new gun control legislation let alone pass any why don’t we go in a different direction.

If I am understanding the problems correctly states are saying they do not have enough money or manpower to set up and maintain databases to track felons and the dangerously mentally ill. These databases are where the federal database receives its information for background checks when licensing weapons at purchase.

According to a USA Today article the lack of state data on felons and the mentally ill means up to 40% of all sales slip through without proper checks.

So… why not mandate a specific tax on gun sales to fund these state databases and the manpower needed to maintain them to keep the federal database current. The amount of tax could be variable according to the type of weapon. For instance a shotgun tax would be much less than an assault weapon tax. Some of this tax could also be used to help victims of gun related tragedies.

This tax would help in more than one way. First the added cost may hold down sales on weapons such as assaults rifles and weapons in general. Those that would purchase them would be more likely to be responsible. Second of course the better the background check the fewer tragedies such as Newtown.

That is a good idea, but in the case of Newtown, the shooter did not own the guns, his mother did.

Moonhead -> RE: My idea for gun control (12/21/2012 11:18:05 AM)

Maybe some sort of punitive action against people who have their guns used for a crime by somebody else would be a deterrent in these cases?

SimplyMichael -> RE: My idea for gun control (12/21/2012 11:23:56 AM)

Crime, for the most part is poor people preying on poor people.

We just need to ban poor people, or at least eliminate them.

Random crazy white people is a very different problem.

Moonhead -> RE: My idea for gun control (12/21/2012 11:29:52 AM)

Maybe confiscating all of the crazy people's family's money would encourage others to stop their kids acting like poor people, however crazy they are in future?

I know...but as I said in another thread I'm not too sure of the mental health of the mother...but it cannot hurt and may very well screen out some potential problems.

I'm not so sure how a law could be worded. But I would love to see some tax money go into research and development on mandatory weapon locks that would prohibited anyone but the owner from using the weapon.

Moon after thinking of your idea I think a great law would be a punitive action against private owners who sell weapons without a third registered party for licensing and background check....when the weapon sold privately is used in a felony.

gawd, leftists always think laws will solve all the problems of the world. How about the mental illness problem in America? The profession has "mainstreamed" nut jobs into the population for years. That's the problem. Plus, how about throwing away the key when idiots commit crimes with guns? By the way, governments have caused more mass killings, MANY MORE, than any lone gunman with a pistol or rifle. BUT, leftists don't really want to solve the problem; they just want some law passed that will make them feel good for about two minutes.

tazzygirl -> RE: My idea for gun control (12/21/2012 11:49:28 AM)

Problem is, not all weapons are licensed. In order for your proposal to work, they all would have to be. Im not disagreeing with you, but again, we are looking at the problem as an after-the-fact.

A problem we can thank the GOP for.

Biometric weapon locks are already made.
As far as a law that would penalize someone if a weapon they owned was stolen and used in a crime, I can see a bunch of Constitutional problems with that.

You're victimizing a crime victim twice.

Moonhead -> RE: My idea for gun control (12/21/2012 11:57:25 AM)

Actually, yes. I think that's something that should be encouraged.

TheRyan7 -> RE: My idea for gun control (12/21/2012 11:57:52 AM)

Maybe this kid was mentally ill. I have not heard he was seeing a psychiatrist or anything to prove he was mentally ill besides what some hairdressers say and old friends from school. I think we jump to everything being said on the news and react. It will be moths before everything is analyzed and a picture has been painted. Theres alot of opinions but no proof. The only proof in the tragedy is the M5 ended these peoples lives.

So...what you are saying is, "Let's tax the legal, law abiding citizens and make them pay for the criminal activities of the law breakers." Right? Sounds fair to me. (sarcasm font)

TheRyan7 -> RE: My idea for gun control (12/21/2012 12:02:15 PM)

Thats very true when the GOP wants to cut spending they look to things like Mental health facilities and healthcare for the poor. Theyll come out and say that we need guns in school. Because the NRA put them up to it.

Most people are not going to just hand their gun to someone and say, "Here, go commit a crime." So if someone has their gun used by someone else in the commission of a crime, then most likely that gun was stollen. This means that the original owner gets to be victimized once by having his gun(s) stollen, then they get to be victimized again by having punitive actions taken against them because of the actions of the person that victimized them in the first place. Again, sounds fair to me. (sarcasm font again)

There are many activites that are taxed only to those who use them.

Alcohol and tobacco are heavily taxed to the law abiding citizens who use them, for example.

And, as evidenced on these threads.. and in the media... not ev eryone takes proper precautions when locking up those guns. A responsible gun owner knows the risks and responsibilities and takes care to secure his/her weapons properly. That doesnt mean shoving them under the bed or in the back of the closet.

Can we stop all thefts? Nope. We can stop a great many more of them than we do now.

Surely, if someone is so lax with deadly weapons that they are stolen, they should be punished. If they can't be responsible with guns, they shouldn't have them in the first place.
