Here's some good news for all the coffee drinkers...

Coffee Lowers the Risk of Oral Cancer by 49 Percent!

The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology... found that the risk of dying from this type of cancer decreased for every cup of coffee that the participants drank a day. The risk plummeted by an average of 49 percent if the participant drank over four cups of coffee a day. This association held true regardless of gender, whether or not the participant smoked, and how often the participant drank alcoholic beverages.

You heard it here first.

That is interesting.

But I would like to see how it correlates with the amount smoked, with oral sex, and with the presence of a herpes virus on the lips or in the mouth. (Coffee does stimulate the herpes virus I have, so I do not drink coffee.)

And I would like to see the research compared with people who drink the same amounts of tea. (Maybe it is simply the hot fluid that is a factor, not the molecular ingredients of the fluid.)

Ask and ye shall receive...

sorry, tea drinkers - the risk for oral and pharyngeal cancer held steady for the participants who consumed tea on a regular basis.

But tea is higher in anti-oxidants so is better for the heart and circulation in general.

Coffee also accelerates the skin aging process and thus exascerbates any tendancy towards skin melanomas.

And another study claims that there is a 66% chance of developing glaucoma if you drink 3 or more cups of coffee a day.

Everything has benefits and risks if taken in more than moderation.

So I'm safe from cancer apparently but not glaucoma.

It sounds to me like the article isn't saying it reduces your chance of getting oral cancer, but rather means you're less likely to die from it. It'd be interesting to see the full study to see what kind of data we're looking at. The abstract only seems to suggest a correlational link, so there could be any number of lifestyle factors.

Interesting that you posted this today, a dear friend of mine received a diagnosis of pharyngeal cancer two days ago.
