kitkat105 -> Happy Hanukkah! (12/8/2012 10:19:03 PM)

I know there isn't many Jewish people on this forum, but if you are - from me to you & yours, Happy Hanukkah! I ate plenty of latkas and other food that my belly could burst!

I found this little gem which I really enjoyed (taken from http://www.chabad.org/library/daily_dose.htm)

On the first night of Chanukah, all eight candle holders stand before you. But you light only one. Tomorrow night you shall light two. You know that eventually you will light all eight.

From which we learn two things:

1. Move step by step in life. Take things on at a pace you can handle.

2. Always grow. Always keep moving. If you did one good thing yesterday, do two today. Your ultimate achievement is always one step ahead.

In this holy light, may we peer beyond limits and hopelessness,
to see hidden strengths and unexpected possibilities.

In this holy light, may we peer across boundaries and bigotries,
to see the simple, touching, human life we share,
and the peace for which we yearn.

In this holy light, may we peer past resentment and bickering,
to see afresh the love that binds us together.

In this holy light, may we venture into the shadows,
to see how we might console broken lives or loves, sunken hearts or hopes.

The Maccabees had retaken Jerusalem, from the follow on to Alexander's empire, but found the temple desecrated with only one small container of oil undefiled. The myth is that the menorah burned for 8 days from that one days fuel until more oil could be consecrated. That is also why fried foods are an important part of the festivities. Latkes being potato pancakes pan fried.
