MyHazelLabyrinth -> Cures for apathy overload? (12/3/2012 12:44:07 PM)

Just thought i'd ask the smart people of CM as to how, when you are ridiculoulsy apathetic. How do you bring yourself back to earth?
This hopefully makes some kind of sense.

Any and all comments are welcome and appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Meh. Can't be bothered to type anything up, but good luck.... I guess.

A bit more useful and less cheeky now....

1) Identify the source of apathy. Maybe it can be minimized or dealt with.
2) Focus on your passions.
3) Get back into hold habits that were healthy and led to spicing up your life.
4) Try new routines or directions that aren't familiar to you. Move, change your diet around completely, fall in love.

thanks for the grin giving and the great advice (=

i just hate the way too much apathy affects me. destructive circles are close behind and sometimes it's just a matter of "feeling it out" but sometimes it isnt.

have a lovely day (=

Diet is the single biggest factor followed by exercise.

kalikshama -> RE: Cures for apathy overload? (12/3/2012 3:12:51 PM)

I would argue exercise over diet.

Try reading Change Your Brain, Change Your Life: The Breakthrough Program for Conquering Anxiety, Depression, Obsessiveness, Anger, and Impulsiveness, which was available in my library system.

I started reading Change Your Brain, Change Your Body: Use Your Brain to Get and Keep the Body You Have Always Wanted this morning, and after reading the second paragraph "It is your brain that decides to get you out of bed in the morning to exercise, to give you a stronger, leaner body, or to cause you to hit the snooze button and procrastinate your workout" put the book down and Did Stuff instead (getting exercise before work, at lunch, and mid afternoon.)

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Cures for apathy overload? (12/3/2012 4:38:46 PM)

I would start by ensuring you are not clinically depressed, or have any type of physical ailment that could be causing the apathy. The disconnection could be something deeper, and you want to rule out those possibilities.

After that, I would recommend exercise and proper diet (as others have suggested), and also reconnecting intellectually and emotionally with people/activities that you enjoy. Understand that even though life may not always go the way one wants, and even though we cannot control everything going on around us, that there is plenty around us that is nourishing to the spirit.

Life is a cycle. We all have our ups and downs. But an ongoing sense of apathy is not healthy. It is good you are asking this question. It is the first step to "bringing yourself back to earth" as you describe it. Please be well.

spend less time here and more time in the real world with friends/family etc

dcnovice -> RE: Cures for apathy overload? (12/3/2012 4:52:00 PM)

A good night's sleep can work wonders, as can real time with loved ones.

Kaliko -> RE: Cures for apathy overload? (12/3/2012 4:54:26 PM)

Pour yourself a drink, turn up the music, and clean out a room that's important to you - bedroom, kitchen, living room. Entirely. Furniture and all. Paint the room. Clean everything as you're putting it back in. Rearrange the furniture from how you had it before.

It's symbolic. And it works.

Diet is the single biggest factor followed by exercise.

Recently learned 90% of depression type symptoms start with issues in the gut. Good nutrition, probiotic & maybe a dopamine stimulent are worth looking into at your local natural foods shop

Any chance it's the time of year? Many people are down around the holidays. And if it isn't from the holidays it's from the short days and lack of sunlight.

Try a Vitamin D III, 5000 IU.

littlewonder -> RE: Cures for apathy overload? (12/3/2012 7:07:32 PM)

I turn off the computer.

I spend more time with Master.

I get out into the real world.

The only time I seem to get really apathetic is when all the idiots post on CM.

NuevaVida -> RE: Cures for apathy overload? (12/4/2012 5:41:50 PM)

I have a history with depression so when I start feeling that way I immediately do a self assessment of sorts, to review what's going on in my life at that given time, and if I've been taking care of myself.

Then I make sure to get up at a decent time every morning (even on weekends), push myself to do various chores around the house that need doing, make sure I eat healthy, and do some sort of exercise, even if it's just a walk. I also push myself to not self-isolate, which I'm prone to do when dealing with stuff.

I say this, of course, with my laundry still not put away from the other day, my carpets needing vacuuming, and totally reclined in my recliner. But then lots of emotional stuff has been going on lately, and I'm on my way out the door this evening, which will help.

That was one of my first thoughts too! Her profile locates her in Australia, though, and days there should be lengthening.

She doesn't drink like a fish but did have a week long binge brought on by personal stressors which continue to impact on her. To her credit she hasn't resorted to drinking again and didn't want to bother me by letting me know she was struggling because she didn't want to add to thhings I am going through at the moment.

She has few support networks but I am going to help her build these up as well as learn to ask for help without feeling guilty.

I am 55 now and I have been apathetic since age nine. It is a see-saw: on the one hand I am extremely handicapped, on the other I am a supergenius. It would be great to not be apathetic and to have a fully functioning immune system again. However, nobody my age has a fully functioning immune system and I do not want to loose my supergenius ability.

As for you: start doing some activities, whether it is walking or one or another sport. Activities that cause some excitement might help. And keep at it: it may take months or years before slight improvements become noticeable. Persist.
