I dont wish to compare lists. I was just curious if some site had enough courage to not be bias one way or the other.

TizzyTara -> RE: Race and religion (12/1/2012 2:29:25 AM)

I saw an article today in the Daily Telegraph in England saying that there's a town there where the local council are going to ban Christmas as they don't want to offend the Muslim residents. Incredible. I will go see if I can find it.

Oxford city council confirmed the events in the city would be renamed 'Winter Light Festival' to make them more inclusive, provoking outrage among shoppers in the city who called for a return to tradition.
The idea has come from the charity Oxford Inspires, the cultural development agency for the county, which runs the celebrations.
Sabir Hussain Mirza, chairman of the Muslim Council of Oxford, said: "I am really upset about this. Christians, Muslims and other religions all look forward to Christmas."
Fr Brian Van-Dungey, a priest in Garsington, Oxon, said: "I am a Christian and pleased to see my Muslim brothers joining in the condemnation of this stupid and dangerous idea; this sort of thinking creates racial problems and should be stopped in its tracks."
Rabbi Eli Bracknell, who teaches at the Jewish Educational Centre in the city, said: "It is important to maintain a traditional British Christmas. Anything that waters down traditional culture and Christianity in the UK is not positive for the British identity."
Oxford Inspires spokesman Tei Williams said: "In Oxfordshire we have Winter Light which is a whole festival spanning two months. Within that festival will be Christmas Carol services."
Liz Gresham of Oxford Inspires added: "We changed the name to be more inclusive."
Ed Turner, deputy leader of the council, said the renaming of the festival was "unfortunate and sends out a problematic message."
He added: "It is the charity's festival. Among councillors there is certainly no desire to downgrade the importance or the prominence given to Christmas.
"There is going to be a Christmas tree and even if the lights are called something else to me they will be Christmas lights."

please note the date.....and what it actually says[8|]

PeonForHer -> RE: Race and religion (12/1/2012 4:18:42 AM)

Yep, that's the story that I remember. The Torygraph printed it, the Waily Wail* picked up the baton . . . and then there were multiple emails whose circulation went viral. I got an email just recently from my mad old goose-stepping dad to which was attached a picture of a Christmas tree, with the caption, 'I Call This a Christmas Tree!'.

*aka the Daily Mail

Politesub53 -> RE: Race and religion (12/1/2012 4:31:22 AM)

This Islamophobic shit gets boring. All faiths in the UK enjoy the Christmas holiday season for a variety of reasons.

Some raised the question of Muslims not celebrating the Royal wedding. I posted photos of Muslims doing just that but they never got back to me.

of course not, theres no shortage of complete assholes in the UK as racists and there always has been , but all to often the "rumours" dont mesh with reality.
its the kind of ignorance that needs to die out.
SNot like we havent had catholic vs protestant conflicts for how many centuries?

Isn't the Telegraph something akin to our Fox news?

Moonhead -> RE: Race and religion (12/2/2012 10:56:43 AM)

No. The Telegraph is more biased and less reliable than Fox.

It's known as a paper for Tories in their 'twilight years', particularly. There's a long-running quip about how its owners 'are planning to launch a new magazine called the Young Telegraph, for the under 70s'. Colonel Blimp would read The Telegraph, if you want a rough characterisation.

Moonhead -> RE: Race and religion (12/2/2012 1:07:17 PM)

They wont know Colonel Blimp. Try Archie Bunker (the yank version of Alf Garnett) instead...

Really? I remember a British army sergeant character appearing in MASH once - a hectoring, red faced git (a la BSM Shutup in 'It ain't half hot Mum') and Hawkeye referring to him as 'Colonel Blimp'.

It may be the Torygraph but it isnt as bad as Fox, Moon.

Lucylastic -> RE: Race and religion (12/2/2012 5:26:31 PM)

Nah that likely title belongs to the Sun and News of the Screws

Powergamz1 -> RE: Race and religion (12/2/2012 5:53:35 PM)

In addition to the cartoons, 'Colonel Blimp' was a movie in the mid 40s. It became popular in the US after Churchill's wounded pride was soothed enough to rescind the ban on its international release.

And you are probably thinking of Bernard Fox, a Welsh character actor who became a staple on American TV.

Bernard Fox, Colonel Crittenden on Hogan's Heros!...Him I remember well! He was on a M*A*S*H episode and also years ago on Bewitched.

jlf1961 -> RE: Race and religion (12/3/2012 3:11:00 PM)

Getting back to the topic, Race and Religion, though in truth one does not necessarily imply the other.

So far it has been implied that when ever there is a derogatory statement made about Muslims, they are implying the Arabic or middle eastern people.

However, the history of the United States is punctuated by ignorance or intolerance of religion. The best example is the treatment of the Mormons, and of course there was the distrust of the Irish Catholics, not to mention the complete persecution of the native american culture and religious beliefs, which could be described as attempted genocide.

Now the new fear is Muslims, and by extension just about anyone of middle eastern or Arab descent.

Since this opinion is widely held, or seems to be widely held, judging by various personalities on FOX news, perhaps, in order to please the conservative, WHITE, Protestant Christian citizens of the United States, we should deport any Catholic, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, basically any non protestant citizen of the United States, and confine the Native Americans to their reservations, this would include all Americans with more than I/4 native American blood.

Of course that means that I would be restricted to a reservation.

ROFL Yhe only reason Fox News isn't as biased as the Torygraph is because Fox News doesn't report news, just fiction.

Fox news would have to improve the substance of what they report to achieve fiction, what they report is pure fantasy.

jlf1961 -> RE: Race and religion (12/3/2012 7:20:51 PM)

I came across a news article that makes me think that we may have many Islamic fundamentalists wrong.

I have a problem with people who are famous for little more than the release of a sex tape, sorry the "unintended" release of a sex tape, or for being one of the "beautiful people."

quote:

Kim Kardashian brings out fans, Islamists and police in Bahrain

MANAMA (Reuters) - Television celebrity Kim Kardashian brought out screaming fans, angry Muslim hardliners and police throwing stun grenades on Saturday when she visited Bahrain to launch a milkshake franchise, witnesses said.

About 100 Sunni Salafists demonstrated with banners outside The Walk Bahrain, an upmarket mall in the capital Manama, after some MPs tried to block the visit over what they called her "bad reputation", according to a local newspaper.

Thousands of fans, who had paid up to 500 Bahraini dinars ($1,360) a ticket, broke into hysterical screams as the 32-year-old celebrity launched the Millions of Milkshakes franchise inside the mall.

Members of the government tried to have her banned from entering the country because of her rather lurid past, and called her an actress with an extremely bad reputation.

And to be honest, she is a really bad actress.

Jonc101 -> RE: Race and religion (12/4/2012 11:39:49 PM)

You've only to look at the slaughter of anyone who's not a radical Moslem, from Mali to Afganistan, from Pakistan to Aceh, and spreading across the globe. It's not just Xns they hate, they hate Buddhists, Copts, Hindus and atheists. Even within their own religion they loathe each other, Shi'ites versus Sunnis and other splinter groups.

That's something I fully understand about the strong men of the M/E - Gaddafi, Saddam, Assad. They were brutal bastards but they knew how to quell the internal hatreds. Western allies have lost the plot and are in a quandary about how to get out without losing face.

Better to lose more young soldiers' lives than lose political face.

What bloody minded hypocrisy!
