The advice on how to walk confidently and as though you are aware of your surroundings is sound, and has nothing to do with Dr. Phil. A predator wants to get his objective as smoothly as possible, he doesn't want any problems. If you look as though you will put up a fight, attract notice in any way, or cause damage to himself, the predator moves on to another, easier target. He's looking to get something, and wants it as least cost to himself. So be engaged with what you are doing, and where you are going, look up, walk tall, look as though you will yell and fight back or cause some blip on the radar. Even a small dog can cause problems if bigger dog picks a fight. The confidence and willingness to attract attention won't always protect you, but it does the job of having the predator move on from selecting you to begin with much of the time.
